" VPF always creates conditions for refereeing work and especially VAR operation to achieve the highest efficiency. In the spirit of all for the tournament, I suggest that the Referee Board, the referee team and assistant referees must regularly exchange, learn from small group experiences and improve their skills and knowledge, " said Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc - General Director of Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF).
Before round 4 of V.League, VPF held a meeting to share experience with referees on VAR operation in V.League 2023/2024.
VAR technology is applied in V.League.
Issues in the operation of VAR are discussed specifically between the referee, the tournament management unit and the technical department. Some contents are explained in detail by the Referee Board to improve the effectiveness of VAR. Some typical situations are also highlighted for the referees to evaluate and draw lessons.
VPF assessed that the coordination between the technical team (RO), VAR and AVAR referees; the position of camera angles on the field; and the way of communication between VAR referees and main referees still have many problems that need to be overcome.
In the 3 rounds of V.League, some matches applied VAR technology but received mixed opinions from teams and fans. In the match between The Cong - Viettel and Thanh Hoa, the main referee and the VAR referee team had inappropriate communication methods and made unreasonable decisions. The time for communication between the referees was long but the extra time was very short.
In the match between Viettel and Hong Linh Ha Tinh, the decisions after consulting VAR were strongly opposed by coach Nguyen Thanh Cong of Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club. Mr. Cong himself was later reminded by VPF about his statements that went beyond the limit.
In the match between Hai Phong and HAGL, the technical angle of VAR was lacking and did not ensure quality, making it difficult for the referee to make decisions.
" We are still in the early stages of implementing VAR. I understand that the VAR operation team does not have much experience yet, and many new problems will arise during the working process, requiring referees to be more responsive and proactive to be able to handle them well.
When all infrastructure requirements are met and the second VAR referee training course is completed, VAR technology will be applied to all V.League matches, so human resources and system operations will need to be improved and prepared to meet the requirements, " said Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc.
In round 4 of V.League, the matches between Hai Phong and Hanoi Police Club and Hanoi FC and Binh Dinh Club will apply VAR technology.
