AI City Challenge is a competition within the framework of CVPR conference, the most prestigious specialized conference in the field of computer vision. In addition to familiar topics such as tracking objects on multiple cameras, analyzing and describing traffic situations, or detecting the behavior of motorcyclists not wearing helmets, this year's AI City Challenge announced a new category with a very high complexity: detecting objects from fish-eye cameras (Road Object Detection in Fish-Eye Cameras).

This problem requires processing image data from ultra-wide-angle traffic camera lenses, including 180-degree and 360-degree panoramic views. Teams are challenged to identify objects such as buses, motorcycles, cars, pedestrians, and trucks from images that are warped, distorted, small objects, and have imbalanced data.

VNPT won the prize in the category of object detection from fisheye cameras, this is a category with a very high level of complexity.

Currently, fisheye cameras are widely used in smart traffic systems in many developed countries. This technology helps reduce blind spots and expand the field of view without increasing the number of cameras. Due to its high applicability, out of a total of 726 teams participating in the AI City Challenge 2024, up to 403 teams registered to compete in the challenge of detecting objects from fisheye cameras. For the group of young AI engineers at VNPT, the new problem at this year's AI City Challenge is an opportunity to compete and, at the same time, affirm the position of "Make in Vietnam" technology on the world map of artificial intelligence. The AI model that the engineering group used in the competition is one of the models that the group applied to develop the VNPT SmartVision image recognition platform.

In recent times, VNPT has developed VNPT SmartVision to meet the needs of image processing in the market with four main groups of features: traffic monitoring, security monitoring, document digitization, face recognition and search. For traffic and security monitoring, the solution has been deployed in many large provinces and cities such as Binh Phuoc, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Ha Nam, Tay Ninh, Bac Giang, and Ninh Binh. In particular, in Tan An city, Long An province, VNPT Smart Vision has been integrated into more than 120 cameras to help authorities manage, promptly detect and handle violations of the law such as not wearing helmets, running red lights, driving in the wrong lane, driving in the wrong direction, stopping and parking in violation of regulations, detecting traffic accidents, etc. Accordingly, the number of violations in the area has decreased by 80%, contributing to improving the quality of life for people in the area.

It is known that in addition to traffic and security monitoring, VNPT is actively developing and applying artificial intelligence image recognition platforms in many important fields such as healthcare, education and digital payments. In the healthcare field, VNPT is also cooperating with the Central Endocrinology Hospital to apply this platform to support doctors in diagnosing and providing appropriate thyroid cancer treatment regimens.

With its achievements, VNPT not only affirms its position domestically but also contributes to bringing Vietnamese technology to the world.
