Exchange rate developments in the world market
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.48% to 104.67.
The dollar hit a three-week high against the euro and also gained against the Japanese yen as traders awaited an announcement from US President Donald Trump on auto tariffs.
Traders fear trade tariffs will dampen US growth and potentially spark a resurgence of inflation.
Earlier, on March 24, Mr. Trump said that tariffs on imported cars could be applied this week, ahead of plans to announce a series of “reciprocal” tariffs next week.
Mr. Trump and his economic advisers have promised to announce those tariffs, and possibly some additional sectoral tariffs, on April 2.
In contrast, the euro weakened ahead of the tariff announcement, falling to $1.075, its lowest since March 5. The currency closed down 0.32% at $1.0757, on track for a sixth straight day of declines against the greenback.
The Japanese yen fell 0.42% against the greenback to 150.5 yen.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said on March 26 that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) must raise interest rates if persistently rising food costs lead to broad-based inflation, but reiterated that core inflation remains below its 2% annual target.
The BOJ is expected to raise interest rates again in July.
