(CLO) A senior Ukrainian military official said on Saturday that the commander of Donetsk forces in eastern Ukraine has been replaced following recent Russian advances in the region.
Accordingly, General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy will replace General Oleksandr Lutsenko as head of the Donetsk operational and tactical group. This decision was made after harsh criticism aimed at Mr. Lutsenko for failing to stop Russian forces from advancing towards the key town of Pokrovsk.

According to Ukraine's DeepState mapping platform, Russian troops are now just 3 kilometers from the town. If Russian troops capture the strategic town, it would be Ukraine's biggest military defeat in months.
The Ukrainian military reported a total of 62 clashes near Pokrovsk in the past 24 hours. Ukrainian officials say there are still about 11,000 people left in Pokrovsk, which has been under constant shelling for months and all vital infrastructure has been destroyed.
Pokrovsk is located at the junction of several important road and rail routes and is only about 20 km from the administrative border of the Donetsk region. The Russian military has set its sights on capturing the town, as from here its forces can control the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions - the two regions that make up the Donbas industrial region.
Ukraine has replaced most of the people holding the most important positions in its military hierarchy after more than two years of conflict with Russia, including the defense minister and the army commander-in-chief.
Recently, President Zelenskyy dismissed the Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force in August 2024, after a modern F-16 fighter jet aided by the West crashed and the pilot died, while fighting off a large Russian airstrike.
