The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 104.27 points.
US consumer price inflation for March (due out on Wednesday) and the European Central Bank (ECB) policy meeting on Thursday will be the key economic data for the forex market this week.
The foreign exchange market had a volatile week earlier, with the USD seeing large swings, and the focus on possible monetary intervention from Japan as the Yen climbed. On the other hand, officials from the US Federal Reserve sent mixed signals on interest rate policy.
The US dollar continued to rise today, but with small fluctuations. Analysts at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia said that the US dollar “may remain supported this week if the US CPI for March remains stable as expected”.
In the United States, a tight jobs market and limited progress on inflation in recent months have prompted top officials, including Chairman Jerome Powell, to call for “patience” as they decide when to cut interest rates.
“In the absence of a clear message from the Fed, it will be difficult to reach an agreement on policy easing,” a team of experts from Morgan Stanley analyzed.
The euro rose 0.009% to 1.0825 EUR/USD. The Japanese yen weakened 0.06% to 151.70 per dollar, suggesting the yen is on track to hit 152 USD/JPY - the limit for Japan to buy back its currency to avoid further depreciation.
