Unusual snowfall covered the Sierra Nevada mountain range (California, USA) early on the morning of August 24 (local time), surprising many people. According to The Guardian , this is the first time in 20 years that California has had snowfall in August.
Madera County Sheriff's Deputy Larry Rich said it was "definitely a surprise" to see snow at Minaret Vista, a lookout in the southeast corner of Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada, in August.
“It’s not every day you get to spend your birthday in a winter wonderland in the middle of summer. It was a day I won’t soon forget and a unique reminder of why I love serving in this area. It’s just one of those moments that makes working here special,” said Rich.
The Madera County Sheriff's Office posted footage on their Facebook page showing the rare summer snowfall and warning visitors to stay safe.
“If you are planning to visit, please drive carefully and prepare for cold weather,” the post said.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says Yosemite hasn't seen snow in August in at least 20 years.
Snow fell at Mammoth Mountain and Palisades Tahoe ski resorts. Lassen Volcanic National Park saw about 3 inches of snow, according to the NWS. However, many areas later saw temperatures rise again.
Meanwhile, forecasters warned of fire risks due to gusty winds associated with the passing cold front.
Flash flood warnings have been issued for the Park Fire, which has spread across four counties and burned more than 400 acres since it started in late July in the city of Chico and moved up the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.
This is the largest fire in California this year and the fourth largest ever recorded in the state. The fire is now 78% contained.
