Multiple media reports have suggested that General Haugh's firing came at the suggestion of far-right activist Laura Loomer, who has supported President Donald Trump's re-election campaign in 2024. Loomer met with President Trump at the White House earlier in the week and reportedly proposed a list of officials to be removed.
Democrats have criticized the decision, especially since no one was fired in connection with the scandal over using the Signal app to discuss sensitive plans.
Laura Loomer has spoken out about the firing of General Haugh, accusing him of lacking loyalty to the Trump administration and linking him to former President Joe Biden. She claimed that the firing of Haugh and his deputy, Wendy Noble, was necessary because they were disloyal to President Trump.
General Haugh’s dismissal was part of a series of similar moves this week, including the removal of several members of the National Security Council and other senior military officials, that have raised concerns about the politicization of the military and national security agencies.
