Airlines launch hundreds of thousands of cheap air tickets during this year's summer peak season

Accordingly, passengers can buy domestic air tickets at prices starting from only VND1,098,000/way for economy class and from VND1,905,000/way for business class. This price includes taxes and fees and is easily purchased on early morning or late evening flights.

In addition, passengers can choose flights departing on weekdays and book early, at least 7 days before the expected departure date to enjoy the best preferential prices.

According to a representative of Vietnam Airlines, currently, all major tourist routes have opened special promotional prices such as Hanoi - Cam Ranh from 1,648,000 VND/way; Hanoi - Da Nang from 1,216,000 VND/way; Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, Hue from 1,227,000 VND/way; Ho Chi Minh City - Quy Nhon from 1,152,000 VND/way; Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc, Da Lat, Nha Trang all from 1,098,000 VND/way... These ticket prices include taxes and fees.

Vietnam Airlines, in order to meet the needs of passengers during the peak summer season this year, has provided nearly 1 million overnight seats on domestic routes in the three months of June, July, and August on the basis of optimizing its fleet. From there, the airline can deploy attractive prices to passengers flying during this time frame.

Not only Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet also "re-introduced" a series of 0 VND tickets. These tickets are mainly displayed on the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route, departure time from September to December, mainly applied to flights on Sundays and early days of the week, early morning and night time slots. This is also the time when domestic tourism is in the low season.

In addition, some flights such as Hanoi - Hue, Nha Trang; Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Hue, Da Nang, Vinh... all have tickets priced at only 70,000 - 90,000 VND.

Vietnam Airlines leaders said that currently, the high input costs and the severe shortage of aircraft are the main reasons for the increase in airfares, especially during peak periods when demand exceeds the supply capacity of airlines. Currently, Vietnam Airlines operates an average of 84 aircraft per month, an average shortage of 12% of operating aircraft compared to 2023.

“It is expected that by the end of 2024, the number of Airbus A321neo aircraft that will stop operating will reach 18-20. At that time, the total number of aircraft operated by the airline will be only about 80,” said the leader of Vietnam Airlines.

In response, since September 2023, the airline has proactively implemented many measures such as advancing the regular schedule, maintaining aircraft to ensure resources are ready for exploitation during peak periods; at the same time, providing additional wet leasing according to demand during peak months.

Specifically, Vietnam Airlines has rented 4 additional wet-lease aircraft to serve travel during the 2024 Tet peak and is continuing to look to rent 4 aircraft within 2-3 months, starting from June 1.

The remaining airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines, are also looking to expand their fleets in the short term. However, hiring additional flights for the summer peak season is currently facing many challenges.

"The average price for "dry lease" of aircraft has increased by 20-30% compared to the market before and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, for "wet lease" aircraft, the minimum price has doubled compared to the peak period of the recent Tet Giap Thin due to the limited number of aircraft," said a representative of Vietnam Airlines.

Bamboo Airways representative also said that the airline is expected to suffer a large loss to be able to rent 2 more planes to increase peak summer load.

Recently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has sent a report to the Ministry of Transport on the results of the inspection reflecting the high airfares during the recent April 30-May 1 holiday. Accordingly, airlines have many different prices but do not exceed the maximum level according to regulations.

However, in the period from January 1 to April 30, the basic economy class ticket prices on domestic routes of airlines basically increased compared to 2023. Including 3 main routes (including: Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi - Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang).

In particular, the average ticket prices of the airlines on the above 3 routes all increased respectively at Viet Nam Airlines (19.9%; 28.4% and 14.9%), VietJet Air (17.9%; 39.9% and 27%), Bamboo Airway (2.1%; 24.4% and 22.5%), Viettravel Airlines (10.2%; 17.7% and 18.6%).

Although the ticket price structure of airlines is still in the low and medium price segment (from 60% to 70% of tickets sold), there are routes that have recorded a high increase in the proportion of low and medium price segments.
