Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route nearly 10 million VND
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Hung (Thu Dau Mot City, Binh Duong Province) said that at the end of November 2024, his family booked 4 plane tickets for his grandparents, wife and son to return to their hometown in Ha Nam on January 23 (December 24) at a price of 3.7 million VND/ticket/route from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. Because he had not yet arranged his work, Mr. Hung did not have a schedule to return and book a plane ticket until January 14.
“During the day I searched, on the airlines’ online ticketing websites as well as ticket offices, only business class tickets were available with the price of Vietnam Airlines at 10.2 million VND. Other airlines including Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways could not be found. Because I had to return to my hometown, I decided on a business class ticket price of more than 10 million VND,” said Mr. Hung.
Mr. Pham Quang Khai (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City), owner of a business specializing in fire prevention and fighting, said that last Wednesday (January 15), because a close partner asked him to urgently book a flight ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, he searched all over the website and asked the ticket office to book but still could not buy an economy class ticket.
“I had to book a business class ticket at a price of more than VND9.8 million/ticket to fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on January 26 (December 27 of the lunar calendar). Because my partner was returning to his hometown to celebrate Tet and celebrate his father’s longevity, I accepted to buy such an exorbitantly priced ticket,” said Mr. Khai.
Not only Mr. Khai and Mr. Hung, but many others have accepted to spend tens of millions of dong just to buy return flight tickets for unavoidable reasons.
Mr. Tran Trung Kien (Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that he and his wife also had to accept buying business class air tickets for more than 9.7 million VND/way to return to their hometown in Dong Anh District during Tet.
"If I don't have to go back, I won't book a flight at this time because it's too expensive," said Mr. Kien.
Providing more than 7.2 million seats but still "ticket shortage"

“With the increase in flights and chartering of additional aircraft by Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet Air and Vietravel Airlines, during the peak period serving the Lunar New Year from December 15 to January 15, domestic airlines have served more than 7.2 million seats, including 5 million domestic seats. That is not including flights of foreign airlines operating in Vietnam , ” said Mr. Bui Minh Dang, Head of the Air Transport Department (Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam).
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, despite adding more flights, many routes from Tan Son Nhat Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) to other localities are quickly filling up during the days close to Tet and in the opposite direction during the period after Tet.
Currently, many flights continue to have a 100% booking rate such as: Hanoi - Buon Ma Thuot (Dak Lak) (100%); Ho Chi Minh City - Hue/Pleiku/Tuy Hoa/Quy Nhon/Buon Ma Thuot/Quang Binh/Thanh Hoa/Vinh/Chu Lai/Quy Nhon/Nha Trang/Hue (100%).
Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang/Hanoi and vice versa, the occupancy rate in the period from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (ie December 26 to January 5) is increasing rapidly. The route from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang/Hanoi on some days near Tet has a rate of over 90%.
According to flight schedules and booking data of airlines, in the 7 days from December 29, the year of the Dragon, Tan Son Nhat airport operated over 6,100 flights and approximately 900,000 passengers, an increase of 8.7% in the number of flights and 4% in the number of passengers compared to the same period last year.
The highest number of passengers passing through the airport was on the 5th day of the first lunar month of the year of the Snake with more than 155,000 passengers (an increase of 4% compared to the peak day after Tet 2024).
At Noi Bai Airport, during the Lunar New Year 2025, there will be an average of 90,000 passengers and 550 flights per day. The peak day before Lunar New Year is expected to be January 24 (December 25) and the peak day after Lunar New Year is February 2, 2025 (January 5) with an estimated 100,000 passengers and 590 flights.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam also said that it will continue to support airlines in management work and coordinate with units in the industry so that airlines can add more flights on domestic routes to meet people's travel needs during the Lunar New Year holiday in 2025.
“The number of passengers at airports, especially at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports, is increasing, and at some times there may be local congestion at the domestic terminal.
Therefore, we recommend that passengers proactively grasp flight information to have appropriate travel plans, and at the same time comply with regulations on aviation safety and security," the Civil Aviation Authority recommended.
