American International School does not accept first-grade students

VTC NewsVTC News27/05/2024

On the afternoon of May 27, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training sent a notice to the American International School Vietnam (AISVN) forcing the school to stop enrolling students in grades 1, 6, and 10 from the next school year.

At the same time, the school is not allowed to accept transfer students until the 2024-2025 school year.

The reason given by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is that the school does not have a feasible plan to improve the current school year 2023-2024 and ensure conditions for organizing educational activities in the next school year.

More than 2 months ago, AISVN International School caused a stir in public opinion when it suddenly let nearly 1,300 students take a leave of absence. At that time, the student groups were entering the peak of exams to prepare for the end of the school year, so this action made parents angry.

Parents of AISVN International School gathered at the headquarters of the Department of Investigation Police on Corruption, Economic Crimes, Smuggling, and Environment - Ho Chi Minh City Police (PC03) and the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City to report the incident and many other issues related to the school.

According to parents, on March 17, the AISVN International School Board held a meeting with parents to inform them about the school's operations.

At the meeting, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ut Em, Chairwoman of the school board, said that the school's finances are currently difficult and unstable. The school has not been able to pay salaries to teachers and staff for many months. Although the school has focused on finding solutions to solve the financial difficulties, they have not been feasible.

At 9:00 p.m. the same day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ut Em sent an email to all parents, announcing that students would be temporarily off school on March 18.

After a day off from school and strong opposition from parents, on the evening of March 18, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ut Em sent an email to all parents, announcing that the school would reopen and resume classes on March 19.

Although the school has reopened, there are no teachers in the classroom. Whether students go to school or not, or come and go, is not under any control from the school. Therefore, students must continue to stay home from school.

On March 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training held a meeting with the AISVN International School Council and nearly 900 parents. At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Director of the City Department of Education and Training announced a report on the school's restructuring.

According to the report sent by AIS American International Education Joint Stock Company (investor of AISVN International School) to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Department of Education and Training, the company said that it is expected to need an expenditure of 125 billion VND in the near future. To cover this expenditure, the school is calling on parents to contribute. This seems to be the only option to maintain the school's operations at this time.

On April 1, the American International School announced the account number to receive contributions from parents. After a few days, the amount of support the school received from parents was 31 billion VND, enough to pay teachers' salaries for March 2024.

On April 3, students of AISVN International School were allowed to return to school.

However, with calculations, the amount of money needed to operate is 125 billion VND, while only 31 billion VND was received from parents. Therefore, the school had to end the school year early on April 26, instead of the end of May as usual.
