The program 'Vietnamese songs with Russian lyrics' pays tribute to excellent teacher and translator Le Duc Man

While translating foreign songs into Vietnamese has become popular, translating Vietnamese songs into Russian is a fairly new field, and perhaps teacher, poet, and translator Le Duc Man is the pioneer and most dedicated to this work.

At the age of over 80, he is still tirelessly researching and translating Vietnamese song lyrics into Russian.

“I have some knowledge and love for education, culture in general, especially poetry, languages, both Vietnamese and Russian, and also love to sing and play musical instruments. Throughout my life, I have only been attached to teaching, writing poetry, translating books and interacting with colleagues and students.

In recent years, I have devoted a lot of effort to translating Vietnamese song lyrics into Russian. I think that we have translated hundreds, thousands of foreign songs into Vietnamese to integrate and absorb the quintessence of world music, but the reverse is still very little… ”, translator Le Duc Man shared.

The program "Vietnamese songs with Russian lyrics" will take place on May 10, 2025 at Hall A1 of Hanoi University.

Over the past 30 years, translator Le Duc Man has translated more than 60 Vietnamese songs into Russian, and this number will certainly continue to increase.

The songs he chose to translate include many famous works by Vietnamese musicians, with melodies familiar to many generations of audiences, from pre-war, revolutionary, lyrical songs, to songs loved by young people today, such as: Ho Chi Minh's song, Last night I dreamed of meeting Uncle Ho, Hope song, Marching to Hanoi, National Defense Army, Neighbor girl, Love song, Northwest love song, Boat and sea, Do you still remember or have you forgotten, Autumn Hanoi, Chalk dust, Every day I choose a joy, The first spring, Joining hands, This earth is ours, Hello Vietnam, One lap of Vietnam, Rebirth...

The Vietnamese Songs with Russian Lyrics program is held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - Russia diplomatic relations (January 30, 1950 - January 30, 2025), the anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7 and the Victory over Fascism on May 9.

This event is jointly developed and implemented by a group of alumni of the Russian Language Department in collaboration with units of HANU. The program will take place on May 10 at Hall A1 of Hanoi University.

Meritorious teacher and translator Le Duc Man was born in 1941 in Duy Tien, Ha Nam. He was famous for his love of learning. His father taught him Chinese characters from a young age, and then he studied French in Hanoi. In 1960, he studied Russian at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Hanoi Pedagogical University. After graduating, he taught at Hanoi University of Foreign Languages ​​(now HANU) from 1966 until his retirement in 2002.

With a deep love for Russian and Vietnamese, translator Le Duc Man is always careful and meticulous in every word during the translation process. He believes that a good translator needs to possess four elements: foreign language proficiency, understanding of the mother tongue, a deep cultural background and skillful translation skills.

During his career, translator Le Duc Man has translated more than 40 Russian literary works into Vietnamese, including many classics such as Mikhail Lermontov's epic poem The Devil, Dostoevsky's works , Tolstoy's Anna Karenina , And Here the Dawn is Quiet by Boris Vasilyev, and many others.

In 2017, he was honored to receive the biggest translation award from the Vietnam Writers Association for the poetic play Suffering for Wisdom by Russian author Aleksandr Griboedov.

For many generations of students of the Russian Department at Hanoi University, excellent teacher Le Duc Man is not only a teacher but also a great inspiration. With more than 35 years of teaching experience, he has imparted knowledge and love of Russian to countless students.

Researcher and lecturer of Journalism and Communication Nguyen Minh Tuan commented: “Indeed, his deep understanding of culture, his sensitive and romantic poetic soul, and his tireless work ethic have created a Le Duc Man who always respects the beauty and cherishes the Vietnamese language. In him, three talented people converge in harmony – teacher, poet, and translator…”.

This program of Vietnamese Songs with Russian Lyrics is a meaningful gift of gratitude that generations of students give to their beloved teacher, and at the same time promises to bring a special cultural event to the public of the Capital.
