In the apology letter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Chung, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Yen City (Vinh Phuc Province), said that in the exam to assess the capacity of students entering grade 6 of Vinh Yen Secondary School for the 2024-2025 school year held on June 16, there was an error in the answer to one question, leading to inaccurate results.
Specifically, in question 4 of the math subject, there is the content: An has a birthday every 4 years. The birthday in 2024 is the third birthday that An's parents have celebrated for An since the day An was born. So what is the day, month, and year of An's birth?
The four answers given include:
A. February 29, 2012
Β. 29/2/2016
C. February 29, 2021
D. February 28, 2016
Initially, the answer was given as B (February 29, 2016). This was controversial because An had a birthday celebration as soon as she was born, and 2024 would be her third.
Ms. Chung said that based on public opinion information, the examination council has researched options, discussed and consulted with leading experts in elementary and higher education mathematics.
Synthesizing opinions, the appraisal council concluded that question number 4 in the math test is a practical problem, it is necessary to consider practical factors when solving the problem and must ensure that the goal of the general education program is "applying mathematics to practice".
The Council agreed that for question number 4, the correct answer is A. February 29, 2012.
In the letter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Chung said that the negligence that led to the announcement of test results and inaccurate assessment of students' abilities was "a very regrettable and never desired thing by the examination board".
“The examination board sincerely apologizes to the students and parents whose children participated in this assessment test and hopes to receive sympathy and understanding.
Through the above incident, the examination council and the City Department of Education and Training would like to draw profound lessons and consider this a lesson in the process of organizing exams, competitions, tests, etc. to avoid questions and answers that cause misunderstanding or controversy," the letter quoted.
In addition, Ms. Chung said that based on the results of the re-examination and the opinion of the City People's Committee, the department will direct Vinh Yen Secondary School to take the next steps and announce the list of successful candidates as soon as possible.
Previously, on June 16, the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Yen City organized a test for students to assess their ability to enter grade 6 at Vinh Yen Secondary School for the 2024-2025 school year.
The competency assessment test had more than 1,580 candidates taking the test at two schools: Vinh Yen Secondary School and Dinh Trung Primary School.
However, after the assessment test results were announced, on social networking sites and in public opinion, some parents had mixed opinions regarding the incorrect answer to a math test question that affected the results.
