Students can access advanced education without having to leave their families, significantly saving on living expenses. They also have many opportunities to develop right in their hometown thanks to cooperation programs between schools and businesses.
Training in key industries right at the local level
In 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics Branch in Vinh Long province will enroll 30 students in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. This is the third year the branch has enrolled students in this field.
Professor Nguyen Truong Thinh, Director of the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technology - Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, said that compared to the main campus in Ho Chi Minh City, this target is quite limited. However, the branch still maintains and continuously promotes because it has longer-term goals.
"This is not just a simple training program but also a long-term investment strategy for the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region. Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics wants to focus on training high-quality human resources, orienting students to become digital transformation experts in agriculture and other fields, contributing to the development of their homeland" - Professor Thinh pointed out.
According to the Director of the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technology, although the training programs in Ho Chi Minh City and Vinh Long have completely similar content, students studying in Vinh Long enjoy special advantages. Small class sizes create ideal conditions for close interaction between lecturers and students, ensuring that each individual receives maximum attention and support during the learning process.
Moreover, with the advantage of geographical location, students can easily access practical experience through regular field trips, helping to consolidate knowledge and skills effectively. In addition, to facilitate learning experiences, the school has a study rotation program between Vinh Long and Ho Chi Minh City for final year students.
Similarly, Saigon College of Technology (SGT) has just opened a new training facility in Can Tho City in March 2025. This is considered a strategic step to meet the demand for high-quality human resource training in the Mekong Delta region.
MSc. Nguyen Hoang Tien, Vice Principal of Saigon College of Technology, commented that Ho Chi Minh City is still a major educational center but at the same time it is also a place with very high competition. Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta is a key economic region, with a great demand for human resources in many fields.
"Many young people in this area after graduating from high school often tend to go to Ho Chi Minh City or other large cities and provinces to study. Most of them face difficulties in living expenses, part-time jobs, etc. Therefore, having a modern, practical training environment and solid career orientation right in Can Tho is essential. When students are mentally strong, their studies will be highly effective" - Master Tien commented.

Access to information on local human resource needs
Dr. Do Van Toan, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work - Da Lat University, said that many students often think that only by studying at a university in Ho Chi Minh City can they open up a broad path for their career development. However, reality shows that studying locally also brings many opportunities and benefits. A typical example is the case of nuclear engineering in Lam Dong province.
Dr. Toan pointed out that choosing nuclear engineering brings many advantages. Specifically, Da Lat has a university that trains in this field, and there is the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute, which helps students have the opportunity to practice and work in an intensive research environment. Lam Dong General Hospital also has a nuclear medicine department. In particular, the nuclear power project in Ninh Thuan opens up great job opportunities for students after graduation.
"Local universities and research facilities often have close links with businesses and organizations, creating many internship and job opportunities for students," said Dr. Toan.
Experts say that in the context of information technology development as it is today, accessing quality training programs is not difficult, the core issue still lies in the individual's efforts. If learners have the wrong direction, the journey ahead will be very difficult.
According to Dr. Tran Dinh Ly, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, university is not the only path to success. If the capacity is not enough, students can still choose the major they love but at a lower level of education such as college, intermediate school, etc.
Dr. Ly believes that career guidance for students needs to closely follow local labor market trends. Students need to be flexible in choosing careers and develop a mindset of lifelong learning.
Solving the problem of retaining talent
According to Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Vocational Education Association, retaining local talent is a complex problem that requires the cooperation of many stakeholders. The main causes of the "brain drain" are the lack of development opportunities, inadequate salaries and benefits, and an unattractive living environment. Local authorities, schools, and businesses need to work closely together to create an ideal living and working environment, thereby retaining and attracting talent, contributing to the sustainable development of the locality.
"Choosing a school far or near, a university or a college... is something that any student and parent is interested in and worried about. Students must know how to consider their own learning ability, their own financial ability and their family's to choose the right major and level of study. Choosing the right "root" will result in many fruits for the "top" - Mr. Tuan likened.
