In the process of agricultural production, many farmers are sensitive to market demand, boldly changing crop structure, initially bringing economic efficiency. Mr. Vo Van Cu (Hamlet 2, Huu Thanh Commune, Duc Hoa District, Long An Province) is one of such farmers.

In the past, Mr. Cu grew sugarcane. Taking advantage of the vacant land, he intercropped with cassava to experiment. When the price of sugarcane dropped, he carefully studied the market situation and switched to growing white cassava. After a while, seeing that cassava was economically effective, he rented land to grow more.

More than 6 years ago, realizing that the market had a yellow-fleshed cassava variety that was popular with consumers, Mr. Cu found the variety to try planting. Initially, people in the area were hesitant because this was a new crop, but gradually, yellow-fleshed cassava became more popular due to its chewy, fragrant, and delicious characteristics. Seeing the effectiveness, he expanded the area of the two types of cassava to more than 2 hectares.

Since switching to growing yellow cassava, the family economy of Mr. Vo Van Cu (Hamlet 2, Huu Thanh Commune, Duc Hoa District) has developed more.

Yellow cassava has a higher yield and price than white cassava. After 6-8 months of planting, each hectare can yield 25-30 tons. With the current selling price of about 8,000 VND/kg, Mr. Cu has a profit of more than 100 million VND/ha/crop. Initially, he sold wholesale at Binh Dien wholesale market (HCMC).

Gradually, cassava has a local outlet and can be sold at a good price. “Some people buy hundreds of kilograms every day to cook and sell at markets and industrial zones. Growing cassava is easier and brings a more stable income than growing rice.

Cassava does not need to be harvested at the same time, it can be pulled in batches depending on customer requirements. Even if cassava is grown for 5 years and then cleared to grow rice, the land is still good and not barren,” said Mr. Cu.

According to Mr. Cu, to grow cassava effectively, you need to have your own techniques. The soil must be carefully treated before planting. Planting cassava by cuttings is the most popular method today, this method gives higher yield than planting by tubers. Cuttings are a piece of cassava stem about 20cm long, with 4-6 eyes, cut diagonally at both ends and then pinned to the ground.

When placing the cuttings, pay attention to the eye part facing up, creating a suitable angle so that later the tuber will develop into the most beautiful banana bunch shape. After planting for a while, it is necessary to monitor the development to replant the cuttings, fertilize the plant,...

Currently, Mr. Cu uses mostly organic fertilizers, minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, so the products are guaranteed to be safe.

Cassava cannot withstand waterlogging, so it needs a drainage system. During heavy rains, water must be pumped out. In addition to the tubers, young cassava leaves can also be used as food.

In addition to growing cassava, Mr. Cu also rented land to grow rice and kumquat, with a total area of nearly 6 hectares. Thanks to hard work and seizing opportunities, his family's economy has developed, allowing him to take good care of his children.

According to the President of the Farmers' Association of Huu Thanh Commune - Tran Thi Anh Hong, growing yellow cassava is a new and effective model in the locality. Mr. Vo Van Cu is a good farmer, gentle, simple, energetic, enthusiastic in the Association's movement.

In the coming time, the Association will research new agricultural models to bring to the locality; at the same time, replicate existing models, contributing to increasing income for farmers.
