The Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province said that although rice prices have decreased, rice farmers in the province still earn an effective income of 23 - 25 million VND/ha, and in some places, even higher income.
"The price of rice has dropped to 6,300-6,600 VND, while in the same period last year it was nearly 8,000 VND/kg, so it has affected the psychology and farmers are a bit sad. However, farmers still have an efficiency of 23-25 million VND/ha for harvested areas," said Mr. Le Huu Toan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province about the efficiency of rice production in the province at a meeting on the production and consumption of rice in the Mekong Delta organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on March 4.

According to Mr. Toan, in the past time, Kien Giang has completed harvesting 78,000 hectares of rice (equivalent to 420,000 tons of rice) on shrimp farming land (an area often affected by salinity) and has sold all of it. Compared to the same period in 2024, economic efficiency decreased by 5 million VND/ha.
For winter-spring rice in freshwater areas that are produced year-round, Kien Giang has 280,000 hectares. To date, about 99,000 hectares have been harvested, and about 180,000 hectares of the remaining area are ready for harvest. These areas about to be harvested will bring farmers 25-30 million VND/ha due to the high yield, estimated at 7.4 tons/ha.
Particularly for areas following the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta, farmers have a profit of 30-35 million VND/ha, which is 10 million VND higher than rice areas outside the model.
In order for rice farmers to achieve sustainable and long-term profits in the future, Mr. Toan proposed that farmers should grow rice according to orders from businesses. Regarding this issue, Kien Giang has 60,000 hectares of production according to orders from 21 businesses. The main players are Tan Long Group, Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company, Loc Troi Group, etc.
"If an additional 100,000 hectares are built according to the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta, Kien Giang will have about 70% of its rice area actively linked with businesses," Mr. Toan added.
In addition, Mr. Toan also proposed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment that localities shift crop seasons to suit the farming conditions of the people and the rice consumption capacity of enterprises, to avoid the situation of "collision of fields" and rice stagnation among the people during peak harvest.
The Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province informed: "Kien Giang has been doing this for 2 years now. In some places, farmers have moved the crop season up by about 15-20 days so that they don't have to touch the fields and businesses can buy easily. That way, farmers and businesses can both...breathe easily."
It is known that Kien Giang has 700,000 hectares of annual rice production area, reaching an output of 4.7 million tons/year, accounting for 20% of rice output in the Mekong Delta. Most of the above areas produce high-quality rice.
