Mr. Tran Xuan Vinh (Tan Lap B village, Dak Hring commune, Dak Ha district, Kon Tum province) pioneered macadamia planting in the early 2000s. Now, this model has been effective, earning a profit of more than 1.5 billion VND per year.

In 1999, Mr. Tran Xuan Vinh came to Dak Ha district to start a business. Here, he worked hard, saved money and had 8 hectares of land to grow coffee. However, after many years, the coffee trees were old and the yield was not high, so Mr. Vinh wanted to find another type of tree to replace them.

Mr. Tran Xuan Vinh is a pioneer in growing macadamia nuts in the locality.

While watching an agricultural TV program, he heard about growing macadamia trees and learned that this tree has high economic efficiency and is being grown in Dak Lak, Lam Dong and Ba Vi district (Hanoi).

After that, Mr. Vinh boldly planted some macadamia trees on his land. He took a bus to Ba Vi district, visited macadamia growing models to see for himself and learn from their experiences. After visiting the macadamia growing model in Ba Vi, in early 2003, he bought 25 seedlings to plant in his family's coffee garden.

"When I first planted it, I was quite worried because this is a fairly new tree compared to Kon Tum land. Furthermore, I had never seen any households grow it, so I didn't know if the tree was suitable for the climate and soil. When the 25 macadamia trees flowered, bore fruit and were harvested, I breathed a sigh of relief. However, because I didn't know how to take care of them, the macadamia trees had low productivity, each tree yielded an average of 10-15kg of fresh fruit," Mr. Vinh shared.

Instead of selling fresh fruit, Mr. Vinh invested nearly 200 million to buy a seed dryer and seed separator, directly processing dried macadamia nuts to serve the market.

To increase productivity, Mr. Vinh sought out effective macadamia growing models in Dak Lak and Lam Dong to learn techniques. After that, thanks to proper care, the macadamia trees grew well, with each tree yielding an average of 25kg of fresh fruit.

Seeing that macadamia is effective and easy to care for, Mr. Vinh decided to plant 2,600 macadamia trees on an area of 8 hectares. Being planted purely, combined with careful care, Mr. Vinh's family's macadamia garden has grown and developed well, with productivity and output increasing day by day. On average, each tree yields about 30kg of fresh fruit. In recent years, his family has harvested more than 20 tons of fresh fruit.

However, instead of selling fresh fruit like other households, Mr. Vinh invested nearly 200 million to buy a seed dryer and seed separator, directly processing dried macadamia to serve the market. According to Mr. Vinh, every 1kg of fresh fruit will produce 0.5kg of finished macadamia. On average, 1kg of finished macadamia is sold for 180,000-200,000 VND. Each year, his family sells about 10 tons of finished macadamia to the market, earning more than 1.7 billion VND after deducting expenses.

Mr. Vinh's macadamia garden brings in more than 1.5 billion VND in profit each year.

According to Mr. Vinh, macadamia is a multi-value forestry tree, has a long exploitation life cycle, is drought-resistant, not too picky about soil, has high vitality, is easy to grow, easy to care for, has few pests and diseases, is not subject to seasonal pressure and requires less care and fertilizer than other crops.

However, to grow macadamia effectively, growers need to know how to choose varieties. Because if you choose good varieties, the tree will quickly bear fruit, have large fruits, and have high economic value. In particular, when planting, you must ensure the distance between the roots, ensure enough light for the whole garden, and avoid the situation where the tree canopy intersects, causing the tree to reduce productivity. In addition, growers need to have care techniques, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages.

Ms. Le Mai Dung - Chairman of Dak Hring Commune People's Committee, Dak Ha District, Kon Tum Province, said that Mr. Tran Xuan Vinh's macadamia growing model brings very high economic efficiency. Mr. Vinh is a typical example chosen by the locality to propagate, mobilize people to learn and follow. The locality also regularly encourages people to plant macadamia trees on vacant land; encourages people to intercrop macadamia in coffee gardens and fruit trees. Thereby, serving the increasing demand of the market and helping people increase their income.
