The debate between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office was more than just a war of words…

Mikhail Alexseev, professor of political science at San Diego State University, emphasized that in a statement to DW on March 2. Discussing the ongoing summit at Lancaster House, London, Professor Mikhail Alexseev shared his hope that European leaders "realize that we are witnessing a major change in global politics."

The unique Oval Office talks were “not just a spat between the two leaders” but “signaled a major shift in America’s distance from Europe.”

Professor Alexseev commented that since Donald Trump took office, Washington “has made major concessions to Russia but put all the pressure on Ukraine.”

The expert argued that the White House boss was trying to appease Russian President Vladimir Putin, instead of his stated goal of achieving peace.

Referring to the US siding with Russia at the United Nations twice earlier this week, Professor Alexseev asserted that it signaled that “Trump’s main goal is to rehabilitate Putin and open the door to lucrative deals with Russia, which now seem to be hampered by the fact that Russia is under sanctions” for launching the conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking at the opening of the summit in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed, "this is a unique moment for European security and we all need to act".

Sharing with the Guardian, former Vice President of the European Commission (2014-2023) Frans Timmermans, former Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, shared the view that Washington is "distanced from Europe".

During his first term, Donald Trump “still had some influence from the right-wing, conservatives, but still wanted to govern according to the rules that have been established for 80 years,” as evidenced by negotiating trade deals “in a way that helps both sides win.”

But things have changed. The White House chief “never loved the EU. In fact, he hated the EU from the beginning, but he knew he had to deal with the EU.” And that is no longer the case, according to Frans Timmermans, “everything they do and everything they say… just repeats the Kremlin’s words in the meeting with Mr. Zelensky.”

Speaking to Sky News , Rasmus Jarlov, Chairman of the Danish Parliament's Defense Committee, criticized some European countries for not spending enough money on defense and "not fulfilling their responsibilities." According to him, if Europe stood up and helped Ukraine, there would only be one result: "Ukraine's victory."

Danish MPs called on European leaders to "stop talking, stop tweeting" and "start paying", "send weapons to Ukraine now".
