"Sweet fruit" from the hands of youth

Việt NamViệt Nam15/01/2025

Taking advantage of the local weather and soil conditions, while affirming the role of youth in agricultural economic development, the Son Vi Commune Youth Union has implemented the model of "Youth participating in agricultural production development" to grow Loc Binh sweet potatoes on vacant land in the winter in Dong Thong, Son Vi Commune. The potato growing model not only helps to make use of vacant land but also creates a fund for the activities of the union in 2025 of the union members and youth of Son Vi Commune.

Implementing Plan 22-KH/ĐTN dated October 5, 2022 of the Standing Committee of the District Youth Union on "Lam Thao Youth participate in agricultural and rural development and green growth in the period of 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030"; the Party Committee's leadership resolution, the 2024 Winter Crop Production Plan of the People's Committee of Son Vi commune; Son Vi Commune Youth Union has planted more than 1,200m2 (about more than 3 Northern sao) of Loc Binh sweet potato in Dong Thong, Son Vi commune.

This is the first year that Son Vi Commune Youth Union has implemented the model "Youth participating in agricultural production development" to grow Loc Binh sweet potatoes on vacant land in the winter crop in Dong Thong, Son Vi Commune.

After more than 3 months of care, the Son Vi Commune Youth Union has started harvesting sweet potatoes with the participation of more than 30 Youth Union members. The estimated harvest yield is more than 1.1 tons of Loc Binh sweet potatoes.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Son Vi commune, this is the first year of implementing this model but has attracted the enthusiastic participation of a large number of young union members.

“We have mobilized the participation of 18 youth unions in the commune. Each time we organize a campaign to plant, care for or harvest potatoes, about 30-40 youth unions will participate. Thanks to the enthusiasm and close coordination of the youth unions, up to now, the model has achieved many positive results, contributing to part of the winter crop production target assigned to the commune,” Mr. Nam shared.

Although this was the first time implementing the model and the Youth Union did not have much experience in agricultural production, thanks to the support of the Commune People's Committee in land preparation and the potato varieties supported by the people in the commune, the quality of the harvested potatoes exceeded expectations.

Loc Binh sweet potato variety is grown in Dong Thong, Son Vi commune.

In particular, the Loc Binh sweet potato variety is easy to grow and requires less care than other winter crops. The care work mainly includes tilling the soil, weeding and fertilizing... After harvesting, the sweet potatoes are promoted and sold by the Youth Union members in the commune on social networking platforms such as Facebook, Zalo... A remarkable result is that after only one day of harvesting, more than 300 kg of sweet potatoes were sold out, with a selling price of about 15,000 VND/kg.

According to preliminary calculations, the economic value of the sweet potato crop is estimated at 8 - 9 million VND. After deducting expenses, the Son Vi Commune Youth Union earned a profit of about 5 - 6 million VND. This amount will be put into the union fund, serving union activities and youth movements in the locality in 2025.

The Loc Binh sweet potato growing model not only helps young people participate in developing agricultural production but also clearly demonstrates the pioneering spirit of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in supporting the locality to implement the winter crop production target. The organization of planting and harvesting sweet potatoes has encouraged the spirit of farmers, proving that young people can fully participate in agricultural production activities and achieve positive results.

The output of Loc Binh sweet potatoes harvested by the Son Vi Commune Youth Union is estimated at more than 1.1 tons of potatoes.

Mr. Chu Duc Oanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Vi Commune, Lam Thao District, shared: "For many years, farmers in Son Vi Commune have not been interested in winter crops, causing a lot of land outside of the two rice crops to be left vacant. The model of growing Loc Binh sweet potatoes imported from Lang Son has been piloted in the commune since mid-2023 and this is the first year that the commune's Youth Union has implemented the model of growing Luc Binh sweet potatoes.

This model not only helps young people earn extra income but also contributes to filling up vacant land in the winter crop, thereby improving the efficiency of land use in the locality. We will continue to support this model and encourage youth union members to expand production areas in the following years.”

The model of “Youth participating in agricultural production development” growing Loc Binh sweet potatoes in Son Vi commune not only brings economic efficiency but also demonstrates the pioneering role of the Youth Union in developing agricultural production, which has contributed significantly to solving the problem of vacant land in the winter crop season, and at the same time, creating a new direction for young people in starting a business from agriculture. With the achieved results, this model promises to continue to develop strongly in the future, while expanding its scale, better serving the work of the Youth Union and the youth movement in Son Vi commune.
