As a poor district with a large ethnic minority population, after 13 years of implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, Tieu Can has mobilized more than 4,000 billion VND to invest in building rural infrastructure.
Tieu Can district was recognized as meeting new rural standards in 2018 according to Decision No. 312/QD-TTg dated March 22, 2019 of the Prime Minister. To date, 9/9 communes have been recognized as advanced new rural areas, and 2 towns have met 9/9 civilized urban criteria.

The average income per capita of Tieu Can district reached 76.6 million VND/year, an increase of 34.5 million VND compared to 2018. Currently, Tieu Can has 0.55% poor households, the rate of households using clean water is over 77.3%.
The construction of Tieu Can district to meet the standards of an advanced new rural district is a step to create momentum for the district to meet the standards of a type IV urban area, becoming a town and the economic, political, cultural and social center of the western region of Tra Vinh province in the coming time.

Implementing the criteria for building advanced new rural areas, the socio-economic infrastructure system of Cau Ke district has received attention for investment and construction, and the appearance of urban and rural areas has improved a lot.
The rural traffic system in the district has been invested, renovated, upgraded, ensuring smooth, inter-commune and inter-regional connections; meeting the needs of easy travel and convenient transportation of goods for people.
Up to now, Cau Ke district has had 10/10 communes meeting the advanced new rural standards; of which, 2 communes have met the model new rural standards, 1 town has met the civilized urban standards. The average income per capita of the district has reached more than 71 million VND/year; the poverty rate is 0.58%, near-poor is 2.03% compared to the total number of households.
The rate of households using electricity in the district reached 99.95%; 100% of commune health stations met national health criteria and 96.5% of people participated in health insurance.

The economic structure of Cau Ke district is shifting in the right direction; the agricultural economic sector accounts for 35.03%; industry and construction account for 31.11% and services account for 33.86%.
