Developing agricultural tourism is identified as a driving force to promote sustainable new rural construction while increasing the value of agricultural products for each locality.

However, agricultural tourism activities are still spontaneous, small-scale and fragmented. Agricultural tourism products are not really attractive to tourists and have not been focused on branding...

Bringing sustainable livelihoods to people

To develop agricultural tourism, in recent times, the State has had many strategies and policies to promote the development of agricultural tourism, such as Decision No. 263/QD-TTg dated February 22, 2022 on approving the National Target Program on New Rural Development for the period 2021-2025, in which the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is assigned to preside over and coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to promote the development of agricultural tourism; Vietnam's tourism development strategy to 2030, sets out the task of promoting the development of community tourism, agricultural and rural tourism, ecotourism...

From the State's incentive mechanism, localities have started to invest and exploit the development of agricultural tourism. Some typical agricultural tourism programs have become brands attracting tourists such as: the ripe rice season tourism program in Duong Lam ancient village (Hanoi); visiting Dong Ho folk painting village (Bac Ninh); Moc Chau farm (Son La); Tra Que vegetable village (Hoi An, Quang Nam); enjoying terraced fields in the ripe rice season in Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai), Sa Pa (Lao Cai) ...

The above activities contribute to bringing more sustainable livelihoods to the community, helping to preserve and promote ecological values and agricultural and rural culture.

Evaluating the effectiveness of agricultural tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that tourism has contributed significantly to changing the "face" of many rural areas, turning many localities into "livable countrysides". Rural tourism not only promotes socio-economic development, shifting the rural economic structure but also preserves the values of landscape, ecology, environment, traditional cultural identity; contributing to narrowing the gap in income and enjoyment between rural and urban people.

Rural tourism is also an important factor in promoting agricultural and rural development through livelihood transformation, promoting the consumption of agricultural products, increasing people's income, supporting the maintenance of traditional occupations, developing valuable local products, creating trust and attachment to the homeland and attracting investment in the agricultural and rural sectors.

Not yet exploited the full advantage

The benefits of agricultural tourism are enormous, but the reality is that we have not yet fully exploited the potential and advantages that nature has bestowed. According to experts, agricultural and rural tourism is still developing spontaneously, fragmentedly, lacking unique creativity, so it has not created added value and differentiation for the product. Many destinations have difficulty connecting with related parties, such as: investors, tourism experts, travel businesses... to perfect products to attract visitors.

In fact, the agricultural tourism industry currently lacks professionalism. Activities often take place spontaneously on a small scale and lack a branding strategy. Meanwhile, cooperation between travel agencies and destinations providing agricultural tourism activities is limited. The linkage to develop agricultural tourism between localities in the province and between localities nationwide has not been effectively implemented...

Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center Le Quoc Thanh said that Vietnam's agriculture is very diverse and rich, each region has different ecological characteristics and products, this is a favorable condition for developing agricultural tourism. However, to do agricultural tourism, it must start from agricultural products and farmers themselves must have knowledge about tourism to create diversity and efficiency.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thi Nga (Vietnam Academy of Agriculture), the development of agricultural tourism helps farmers to transform from traditional agriculture to agriculture combined with entertainment and experience, bringing high efficiency to both the agricultural and tourism sectors. Therefore, it is necessary to improve and constantly improve the quality and diversify agricultural tourism products to meet the needs of tourists to increase the level of spending of tourists on agricultural tourism products and non-tour services, and supplementary services.

In addition, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation between travel agencies and destinations providing agricultural tourism activities. Promote linkages in developing agricultural tourism among localities in the province and among localities nationwide; facilitate connection between destinations and travel agencies to complete and build agricultural tourism products as well as attract domestic and international tourists.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicts that agricultural and rural tourism will become a strong growth segment in the coming time; by 2030, the number of visitors participating in this type globally will account for 10%, with revenue of about 30 billion USD, annual growth of 10-30%, while traditional tourism types only grow on average 4%/year. Therefore, if we know how to take advantage of inherent advantages, agricultural and rural tourism in Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular will certainly become a "gold mine" of the national green economy.
