Mr. Putin knew Mr. Prigozhin before becoming President of Russia.
During a meeting at the Kremlin reported on Russian television on August 24, President Putin mentioned for the first time the crash of Mr. Prigozhin's personal plane, and expressed condolences to the relatives of the 10 people who died.
The Russian president said Mr. Prigozhin returned to Russia on August 23 and met with a number of officials, but did not mention who specifically, according to TASS.
Mr. Putin said he had known Mr. Prigozhin since the early 1990s.
"He was a man with a difficult destiny, he made some serious mistakes in his life," Putin said, adding that Wagner had achieved both personally and for the common effort entrusted to him by the Russian president in the last months of his life.
"He is a talented businessman," the Russian President commented, while affirming that Russia will conduct a full investigation into the plane crash.
On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied involvement in the crash of Wagner's plane.

Mr. Prigozhi's private plane was en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg before crashing into the ground in Tver province, about 300 km north of Moscow, late on August 23.
All 10 people on board were killed, including seven Wagner passengers and three crew members.
Mr. Prigozhin was 62 years old.
