(CLO) A US Navy fighter jet crashed in San Diego Harbor, California on Wednesday morning. According to information from the San Diego Fire Department, the two pilots on board the plane managed to parachute before being rescued by the Coast Guard.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. According to a Navy official, the incident occurred while the pilot was performing a "go-around" maneuver - meaning the plane had just landed but needed to accelerate to take off again.
The area where the accident occurred has been cordoned off and secured. The US Navy also called on the public to notify authorities if they find any debris related to the accident.
The fighter jet was in San Diego for the Bamboo Eagle integrated exercise and was operating from North Island. The airfield at the base was temporarily closed following the crash but is expected to reopen soon to resume flights for the exercise.
The EA-18 Growler is the electronic warfare version of the F/A-18 Super Hornet, designed to perform advanced electronic warfare and suppression of enemy air defenses missions. Bamboo Eagle is one of the US Navy's key exercises to improve coordination between air and naval forces.
There are currently no reports of damage to residential areas around the crash site. The US Navy continues to investigate to determine the exact cause of the accident.
