Iran, Russia and China share a desire to counter US influence and have held similar exercises in the region in recent years.
Iran's Tasnim news agency said the drills "will begin on March 11 at the Chabahar port" in southeastern Iran on the Gulf of Oman, but did not specify when they would end.
According to Tasnim , the drills involved "warships and combat ships and support vessels of the Chinese and Russian navies, as well as warships of the Iranian army and the Revolutionary Guards."
The exercise will take place “in the northern Indian Ocean” and aims to “enhance regional security and expand multilateral cooperation among participating countries”.
Azerbaijan, South Africa, Oman, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Qatar, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sri Lanka will attend as observers.
China's Ministry of National Defense also announced on social media WeChat that the country would dispatch "a destroyer and a supply ship."
