General Secretary and President To Lam had meetings with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Director-General of UNDP and Executive Director of UNICEF.

According to the special correspondent of the Vietnam News Agency, continuing activities within the framework of his working trip to New York, the United States, on the afternoon of September 24 local time, General Secretary and President To Lam had meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang, Director-General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner and Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Catherine Russel.
At the meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, General Secretary and President To Lam shared the UN Secretary-General's comments and assessments of the international situation and the multi-dimensional challenges facing the world. In that context, the General Secretary and President said that the United Nations is playing an increasingly important role in global governance, promoting multilateral cooperation, upholding international law, contributing to narrowing the gap and promoting development, ensuring the full participation of all countries.
Sharing about the serious impact of storm No. 3 (international name Yagi), the General Secretary and President thanked the active support of United Nations organizations in Vietnam and asked the United Nations to promote cooperation to enhance the capacity of countries to withstand and respond to natural disasters and manage risks and disasters.
The General Secretary and President also asked the UN Secretary-General to continue to pay attention to promoting cooperation areas such as energy transition, green transition, digital transformation, building digital governance systems... while paying attention to the interests of developing countries, including Vietnam.
As someone who once took to the streets to protest in support of Vietnam's previous resistance war, the UN Secretary-General has very special feelings for Vietnam, highly appreciating the role, position and achievements of Vietnam's socio-economic development.
Mr. Gutteres thanked and appreciated Vietnam's active participation and contributions in important agencies, as well as in all priority areas of the United Nations, especially in peacekeeping, implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, responding to climate change, and equitable energy transition.
The two sides agreed to continue efforts, enhance dialogue and promote further deepening of Vietnam-United Nations and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-United Nations relations in the coming time, promote ASEAN's central role in resolving regional issues, especially in maintaining peace and stability in the region, peacefully resolving disputes in the East Sea, especially in compliance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

The two sides also agreed on cooperation measures to promote sustainable development, put the 2030 Agenda back on track, transform energy, enhance capacity to effectively respond to global challenges, and further enhance Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping activities in the coming time.
General Secretary and President To Lam respectfully invited the United Nations Secretary-General to return to visit Vietnam at an appropriate time.
At the meeting with President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang, General Secretary and President To Lam congratulated Mr. Philemon Yang on being elected President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly and highly appreciated the theme of this year's session on strengthening cooperation and action "to promote peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations."
The General Secretary and President affirmed that Vietnam will actively support the leadership role and initiatives and priorities of the President of the General Assembly during this term, including promoting peace and security through multilateral efforts, effectively implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, enhancing response capacity for vulnerable countries and least developed countries, sustainably managing natural resources, promoting gender equality, promoting the role of youth and younger generations, narrowing the digital gap, promoting innovation, digital access, etc.
The General Secretary and President affirmed that Vietnam firmly supports multilateralism with the United Nations playing a central role in global governance, upholding the role of the General Assembly as the most important body comprising all UN members; and promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
General Secretary and President To Lam said that Vietnam is ready to promote tripartite cooperation in agriculture with funding from development partners and Vietnamese experts, techniques, and plant varieties with countries, including Cameroon, the country where Mr. Philemon Yang once held the position of Prime Minister and has traditionally had friendly relations with Vietnam.
The President of the UN General Assembly highly appreciated Vietnam's relations with the UN and Cameroon, saying he was impressed by Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements; highly appreciated Vietnam's active, dynamic role and increasing position, and agreed to cooperate with Vietnam to promote compliance with the UN Charter, international law and multilateralism.
Understanding Vietnam's strengths in science, technology and agriculture, Mr. Philemon Yang pledged to support the promotion of Vietnam-Cameroon cooperation in these areas, seriously taking note of and assisting in resolving the issues raised by Vietnam.
On this occasion, the General Secretary and President invited President of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang to visit Vietnam in the coming time.

At a meeting with Director General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner, General Secretary and President To Lam highly appreciated the role and contributions of UNDP to Vietnam in the process of socio-economic construction and development over the past five decades.
In the current important new development stage, the General Secretary and President requested UNDP to focus on supporting Vietnam in terms of knowledge and resources, promoting science and technology transfer towards building a green economy and circular economy.
Appreciating Mr. Steiner's contributions while working in Vietnam as a technical advisor on water security, the General Secretary and President asked UNDP to continue supporting Vietnam and the Mekong River Commission in managing and using water resources sustainably and effectively, contributing to enhancing resilience and responding to water security challenges in the basin.
The UNDP Director General said that Vietnam is a model in socio-economic development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, bringing valuable practical experience to the United Nations and the international community.
Mr. Achim Steiner shared his feelings and good impressions of the country and people of Vietnam, affirming that UNDP is proud to be Vietnam's development partner in green growth, energy transition and innovation.
UNDP is ready to support Vietnam in building a green, sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development policy, attracting investment, finance and green technology sources to improve the ability to respond to climate change and promote a fair energy transition and digital transformation to improve self-development capacity, avoiding becoming a market of monopolistic corporations.

At the meeting with UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russel, the General Secretary and President highly appreciated the cooperation between the two sides which continues to bring many positive results, especially UNICEF's valuable support for the expanded immunization program for children.
Regarding the direction of cooperation in the coming time, the General Secretary and President emphasized the importance of ensuring resources to implement the Sustainable Development Goals related to children, especially in the fields of education, health care, nutrition and vaccines.
In the immediate future, the General Secretary and President asked UNICEF to provide policy advice and implement support packages to ensure the best care, protection and education for children in areas affected by storm No. 3; at the same time, he suggested that both sides should have practical and meaningful activities towards the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-UNICEF cooperation and 35 years of Vietnam's participation in the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 2025.
The UNICEF Executive Director highly appreciated the efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals in Vietnam, especially in the fields of child protection, care and education, especially climate education, as well as the readiness to prevent and provide relief related to natural disasters with many good typical experiences that can be shared with other countries.
For its part, UNICEF will continue to actively implement the Vietnam-UNICEF Country Programme for the 2022-2026 period to best meet Vietnam's priorities, support the settlement of the consequences of storm No. 3, especially for schools to reopen soon, and is ready to coordinate the implementation of Vietnam's initiative on International Day of Play on June 11 every year, and hopes that Vietnam will be UNICEF's partner in promoting girls' access to science and technology./.
