Thousands of people have been evacuated from border areas in the Kharkiv province, Ukrainian officials said on May 12, amid Russia's continued cross-border offensive.

Russia's surprise attack began on May 10 and soldiers have been advancing in small increments in an area they were pushed back from nearly two years ago, after advancing into Ukraine.

"A total of 4,073 people have been evacuated," AFP quoted Kharkiv governor Oleg Synegubov as saying.

"The entire northern border areas (in Kharkiv province) are under enemy fire almost day and night. The situation is difficult," he added.

Senior police officer Oleksiy Kharkivsky in the Kharkiv town of Vovchansk who helped coordinate the evacuation said “several people” were killed by shelling on 11 May and one body was found in the rubble overnight.

"The town was under constant fire. Everything was being destroyed... You heard explosions, artillery, mortars. The enemy was attacking the town with everything they had," he said.

The officer said about 1,500 people in the town had been evacuated since May 10 and that at least 32 Russian drones had attacked the town in the past day. He said the evacuation groups had been repeatedly targeted by Russian fire.

Russia controls 4 more villages

Reuters on May 12 quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry saying that its forces had just gained control of four more villages in the Kharkiv province in northeastern Ukraine, in the context of Ukrainian generals acknowledging the difficult situation there.

The Russian side declared control over the villages of Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets and Oliinykove.

Kharkiv province borders Russia's Belgorod province to the north. On May 10, Russia launched a new offensive from its territory, threatening to open a new front.

On May 11, Russia declared control of five villages in Kharkiv, including Borysivka, Ogirtseve, Pletenivka, Pylna and Strilecha, but Ukraine asserted that it had repelled attacks and fought to control these areas.

Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said on May 12 that Ukrainian forces are facing a difficult situation in combat in Kharkiv and are doing everything possible to hold the front line.

"Defense Forces units are fighting fiercely in defense, attempts to break through the Russian defense line have been thwarted. The situation is difficult, but the Defense Forces of Ukraine are doing everything possible to hold the defense lines and strongholds, causing damage to the enemy," Reuters quoted Mr. Syrskyi as writing on Telegram.

The Kyiv Independent news site on May 12 quoted Governor Oleh Syniehubov of Kharkiv province as saying that Russia had attacked 27 areas of the province in the previous 24 hours, killing 3 people and injuring 5 others.

Ukraine's National Emergency Service said dozens of homes were destroyed or damaged in the morning air strikes.

Belgorod under attack

The Russian Defense Ministry said on May 12 that fragments of a Tochka-U missile launched by Ukraine and intercepted by Russian air defense forces fell on an apartment building in Russia's Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border.

Accordingly, the Ukrainian side also attacked with Vampire and Olkha rockets.

Russian officials say at least seven people were killed and 15 injured when part of a high-rise apartment building collapsed.

Images shared by Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov showed at least 10 floors of the collapsed building. RT quoted a source as saying that at least 20 people were trapped under the rubble. Residents were evacuated to avoid the risk of the rest of the building collapsing.

"The city of Belgorod and the Belgorod region suffered a massive shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Due to direct hits on the apartment building, an entire facade from the first to the tenth floors collapsed," he said.

In the southern Russian region of Volgograd, Governor Andrey Bocharov said a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery. The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no casualties. Ukraine did not immediately comment on the reports.

The Kyiv Independent quoted an anonymous source from the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR) as saying that UAVs controlled by this force attacked military targets in the Russian provinces of Volgograd, Lipetsk and Kaluga on the evening of May 11 and early morning of May 12. Among the targets was an oil refinery in Volgograd.
