MAG celebrates 25 years of operation in Vietnam

This afternoon, March 15, in Dong Ha City, MAG held a ceremony to celebrate its 25th anniversary of operations in Vietnam. MAG Executive Director Cormack Darren William; MAG Country Director in Vietnam Sarah Goring and delegates from embassies, organizations and projects attended the ceremony. On the side of Quang Tri province, there were Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam; representatives of leaders of relevant departments, agencies and units.

MAG is a non-governmental organization that works in the field of humanitarian mine clearance in areas where war has occurred or is occurring. Founded in the UK in 1989, MAG's activities have brought safety and helped stabilize the lives of tens of millions of people in war-affected areas in more than 70 countries around the world.

In Vietnam, MAG began operating in Quang Tri in 1999, then expanded to Quang Binh and Quang Nam. Currently, MAG is one of the largest civilian mine clearance organizations in Vietnam.

During its 25 years of operation in Quang Tri, MAG has completed the clearance of nearly 180 million square meters of land. During that process, the organization's staff discovered and successfully detonated over 230,000 explosives of various types, contributing to a safe life for nearly 700,000 people. MAG has also conducted more than 1,000 communication and education activities on mine accident prevention for nearly 15,000 people in localities in the province.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam sent his congratulations to the delegates, officers and staff of MAG on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in Vietnam. According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam, over the past time, MAG has always accompanied and cooperated closely with the government and people of Quang Tri province to carry out many activities.

Together with other mine action organizations, MAG has made an important contribution to reducing mine accidents, bringing safety to the land and countryside in Quang Tri. The goodwill, efforts and meaningful contributions of MAG to the province over the past 25 years have always been highly appreciated and recognized by the leaders and people of Quang Tri.

Expressing his deep gratitude to MAG, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam hopes that MAG and other mine action organizations will continue to accompany the province in the coming years to successfully overcome the consequences of bombs, mines and toxic chemicals in Quang Tri after the war, contributing to promoting international cooperation and sustainable socio-economic development.

At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam awarded a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to MAG for its positive contributions to overcoming the consequences of post-war bombs and mines in Quang Tri. A representative of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations awarded a certificate of merit from the Presidium of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations to MAG for its positive contributions to the socio-economic development in Vietnam, period 1999 - 2024.

On this occasion, the leaders of MAG also commended and rewarded officers and employees who made many contributions to mine clearance activities and overcoming the consequences of war.
