We are talking about People's Armed Forces Hero Le Y, currently residing in Vinh Xuan village, Binh Trung commune, Thang Binh. He said: "My father and two brothers all died in the resistance war against America. I did not think I could live to see this day."
Quick to destroy the enemy
People's Armed Forces Hero Le Y was born in 1948 in Lanh An village, Que Long commune, Que Son district. His father was Le Su - a party member during the anti-French resistance, who died in 1970. His two older brothers, Le Nguyen, died in 1970 and Le Nhung, died in 1968. His mother, Ha Thi Quynh, was awarded the title of Heroic Vietnamese Mother.
Mr. Le Y said that the scenes of constant arrest, torture, execution, and denunciation of communists by the US and Diem regime fueled his will to fight for national independence. Once in 1959, the enemy captured his father, his brother, and other revolutionaries, tied them to the rafters, and brutally tortured them, many times to death and rebirth.
In 1965, following the example of his father and two older brothers, he enthusiastically joined the revolution, working in the locality (at that time Son Lanh commune). At that time, his older brothers had joined the army, Le Y had just joined the local guerrillas. In 1966, during a sweep by the enemy, when enemy tanks went up Doc Mon, he and his comrades shot and killed many enemies, the M113 was hit by bullets and had to turn around and run in the opposite direction.
In early 1967, the US troops landed in Cam Doi to build a base and conducted fierce bombing and destruction of the surrounding areas to protect the base. Le Y and the guerrilla teams organized a belt to destroy the US around the west of Cam Doi base. Mr. Le Y was creative in taking enemy artillery and damaged bombs to improve them into mines and arrange them in a line to attack the enemy.
Mr. Le Y was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President on July 26, 2012. He was awarded the First Class Military Exploit Medal by his superiors; 5 badges of Brave American Destroyer; 3 badges of Brave Mechanized Destroyer.
On March 20, 1967, a 30-man American platoon searched the Lanh An area and camped overnight at the foot of the hill. Under the command of political commissar Nguyen Dinh and deputy commune leader Le Thi Phong, the guerrilla teams divided into three groups to approach the enemy. At 1 a.m. on March 21, all three guerrilla teams simultaneously threw grenades, attacked and completely destroyed the American platoon, and captured two guns.
On April 10, 1967, an American platoon went up to the Hon Chai area and was shot and killed by Le Y and his comrades. On March 29, 1968, an American company went up to the Doc Mon area. Le Y followed the stream bank and killed 2 soldiers. When the enemy opened fire, Le Y cleverly followed the stream to retreat to the hamlet. Continuously from 1967 to 1969, Le Y killed many enemies by making bombs and mines from captured weapons.
Mr. Le Y recalled that on the morning of October 9, 1970, he and key officials of the commune were in the house of Mrs. Ly Thi Duc when the Americans suddenly arrived. Not having time to hide, Le Y quickly shot and killed the enemy in front of the house, then took down the rear guard at the back of the house, and shot down a number of them to open a path to help the 6 officials escape the enemy's encirclement.
Many achievements
Although he is 77 years old this year, Mr. Le Y still remembers the battles clearly. He said that in 1971, the enemy continuously swept into the Son Lanh commune area. He and his comrades planted many mines in the gardens, killing 22 puppet soldiers of the 3rd division while searching for secret tunnels. In total, in 1971, Commune Team Leader Le Y and his comrades killed nearly 100 enemies.
In 1972, Mr. Le Y and the local armed forces joined forces with the main force of Military Region 5 to achieve the resounding victory of Cam Doi. Mr. Le Y said that the victory of Cam Doi marked the maturity of the local armed forces, and the revolutionary movement of the people of Que Son reached a new height.
In 1973, Le Y and his comrades killed dozens of soldiers of the 3rd Division. He also mobilized people to collect enemy grenades to hand over to the guerrillas and provided rice and food to help the guerrillas and local armed forces fight the enemy.
On July 21, 1974, when the main force attacked Hon Chien, Le Y commanded the Son Lanh guerrilla unit to attack the Nha Tam concentration camp, killing 14 insurgents; capturing the hamlet chief and 53 insurgents and civil defense; seizing 24 guns; eliminating the concentration camp, and bringing 280 people to the liberated zone.
From 1969 to 1975, Le Y directly commanded the guerrilla unit; connected to build bases; mobilized young people to go to liberated areas to join the guerrillas and join the army.
In the period 1965 - 1975, Mr. Le Y participated in 43 coordinated battles; fought independently and destroyed 356 enemies; called 5 to surrender; captured 32 guns; damaged 14 tanks and armored vehicles; and shot down 1 plane.
Recounting his exploits, hero Le Y was moved to remember his comrades who had sacrificed their lives in the battles. He said: “The fierce war is over. I only hope that the young generation today will always strive to build our homeland to become more and more prosperous.”
