“Supporting” women in economic development

Unlike the past, when women were mainly housewives and dependent on their husbands, in modern society, the majority of women are proactive and self-reliant in developing their economies and improving their living standards. Accompanying its members, the Women's Union of Phan Thiet City has been focusing on supporting livelihoods and "giving strength" to women.

Members and women are informed about how to use capital effectively.

After working at the travel company, taking advantage of the high price of dragon fruit, Ms. Phan Thi Thu Trinh (Tien Hoa village, Tien Binh commune) went to the field with her husband to take care of the plants and visit the garden. Thanks to the efforts to overcome difficulties and the consensus of the couple, her family's 500 dragon fruit trees have grown well and achieved high productivity in recent years. After paying off the capital of 50 million VND to the bank in the previous loan period, she continued to receive support from the Women's Union to apply for a second loan to proactively invest in more fertilizers and pesticides.

By integrating propaganda activities combined with guidance and "supporting" loans, it is really helping women like Ms. Trinh on the path to economic development and getting rich. Ms. Tran Thi Sang - President of the Women's Union of Tien Thanh commune said: The demand for loans of women in the commune is quite high, because life is still difficult. Therefore, through the trust from the Provincial Social Policy Bank, the Women's Union of the commune has conducted surveys, supported the preparation of documents and coordinated the organization of talks, guiding members to use the capital effectively, for the right purpose, and pay interest on time. Up to now, the total loan capital managed by the Union is more than 19 billion VND with nearly 1,000 women/21 groups borrowing to grow dragon fruit, raise livestock, send children to school, build toilets and clean water systems...

In addition, to help members master the knowledge to build models in agriculture for economic development, the Association regularly organizes training courses to transfer science and technology, share business methods, introduce effective livestock and crop farming households for members to visit, learn experiences and apply them to their families' actual conditions. From the above capital sources and experiences, many economic development models have been built and successfully applied, contributing to the locality's poverty reduction very effectively.

In particular, the beneficial habit that women reap through the loan support activities of the Women's Union is the habit of saving. Developing the economy while practicing saving has been regularly communicated by the Union at all levels so that members and women understand and implement, for the goal of sustainable family economic development.

Assessing the effectiveness of the loan capital, Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Yen - Vice President of the Women's Union of Phan Thiet City assessed: The loan capital has been and is being effective, creating leverage for female members in the area to actively participate in production and business to increase income and stabilize their lives. Currently, the Union is receiving capital entrustment from the Social Policy Bank for 109 groups with nearly 5,000 households borrowing/193.26 billion VND and mobilizing savings of 15.706 billion VND. In addition, the Union has implemented a capital program to support women in starting businesses, supporting cooperatives managed by women, creating jobs for female workers... Thereby creating more prestige and trust for women to participate, stick together and build the Union organization increasingly stronger, promoting socio-economic development in the locality.
