A meaningful journey
Responding to the emulation movement "Join hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide in 2025" of the Prime Minister and the call of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, launched by the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee, with the message "Millions of loving hearts - thousands of happy homes", the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Long Xuyen City was launched in mid-December 2024.
“The locality determined that the implementation of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses not only improves the quality of life for the people, but also strengthens the people's trust in the Party and the State. Accordingly, the city promptly established a steering committee, operating regulations and assigned specific tasks to members. At the same time, proactively developed an implementation plan, resolutely directed with a high sense of responsibility. In addition, the city's steering committee regularly monitors, reviews and inspects the implementation so that the program takes place smoothly, closely, substantially and transparently" - Member of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee, Secretary of the Long Xuyen City Party Committee Huynh Quoc Thai informed.
Through screening, the city identified 60 households eligible for support from the program (18 houses repaired, 42 new houses built), including 4 policy households. With a spirit of urgency and seriousness, the Steering Committee for the implementation of the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses (referred to as the Steering Committee) of Long Xuyen City mobilized the participation of the entire political system, promoted the role of the solidarity nucleus of the city's Fatherland Front and wards and communes, connected businesses, organizations, and philanthropists inside and outside the locality, creating a huge resource to build and repair 60 new houses.
With the spirit of "whatever you have, contribute", the contributions of charitable organizations, individuals and people from all walks of life in Long Xuyen City, whether small or large, little or much, are all "bricks of love", building solid houses, bringing joy and happiness to many families. Long Xuyen City is the first locality in the province to complete the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses with proactive and creative approaches... Now, 60 poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households in Long Xuyen City have spacious and sturdy houses to get through the rainy and sunny seasons, giving them the motivation to rise up in life. |
As a result, by March 28, the city had completed and handed over 60 houses, with a total cost of over VND 4.3 billion (including funding mobilized by the City Steering Committee and wards and communes; support for people with meritorious services; counterpart funding from beneficiary households). The completed houses met the requirements on area, construction structure and were fully equipped with auxiliary works, ensuring the quality of life for the people. "In the process of implementing the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the Steering Committee of Long Xuyen City has been self-reliant, connecting with sponsors inside and outside the area to mobilize socialized funding sources for implementation, not using the source of 5% savings of regular expenditures of the local budget in 2024 and not receiving support from the province so that the province can focus on funding to support other localities with more difficulties" - Chairman of the People's Committee of Long Xuyen City Tran Minh Duc said.
Sharing about the 27-day journey of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, Chairman of My Khanh Commune People's Committee Ho Van Lanh said that on February 26, the commune held a ceremony to receive funds and start building 8 new houses for poor and near-poor households in the area. To ensure the progress and quality of the project, the Commune Steering Committee regularly visited each household to monitor, support and urge the construction unit. After 27 days of urgent construction (from February 26 to March 23), 8 houses were completed, with a total construction cost of 570 million VND (of which the City Steering Committee supported 480 million VND, the commune mobilized 20 million, the rest was contributed by the families).
Spread the spirit of charity
In addition to the efforts, striving, initiative, positivity, and sense of responsibility of the Steering Committee for Eliminating Temporary and Dilapidated Houses in Long Xuyen City, there is also the cooperation and contribution of all levels, sectors, and the responsibility of households, especially the contributions of philanthropists and businesses. Mr. Chau Viet Long (residing in Binh Khanh Ward, Long Xuyen City) shared: “The amount of money contributed is not just a number, but a part of the enthusiasm and responsibility of businesses towards the community. New roofs will be the starting point for dreams and good plans of the people. Hopefully, this small action will spread the spirit of “mutual love”, so that we can build a better society together”.
Long Xuyen City leaders commend and express gratitude to benefactors who contributed to the success of the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.
“With a sense of responsibility and compassion, our company is determined to join hands with the government and people of Long Xuyen City to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses. We understand that a solid roof is not only a place to shelter from the rain and sun, but also the foundation for a stable and happy life for each family. Therefore, the company actively contributes materially and spiritually, contributing to bringing a comfortable home to families facing many difficulties” - Deputy Director of An Giang Petroleum Company, Tran Thanh Trung shared.
“The completed and handed over houses have brought joy and stability to disadvantaged families. The completion of the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses not only demonstrates the local government's concern and care for people's lives, but also the joint efforts of the whole community. The valuable funding from charitable organizations and individuals is managed and used by the locality for the right purposes, making an important contribution to social security work and the development of My Khanh commune,” said Ho Van Lanh, Chairman of My Khanh Commune People's Committee.
Party's will is in harmony with people's will
Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of An Giang Province Le Van Nung called on businesses and philanthropists to continue to pay attention and support to contribute to the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in the province to be completed soon as planned. At the same time, he hoped that the families who were given new houses would take good care of their houses, work hard to enrich their families, and contribute to the development of their homeland and country. |
Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of An Giang Province Le Van Nung shared: “Through attending groundbreaking ceremonies, checking the actual progress of projects to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, directly encouraging and visiting people who benefited from the program, I felt the joy, excitement and happiness of each household when the Party and the State cared for, looked after and supported the funding to build a decent home. There were people who cried because their lifelong wish that they themselves could not believe had come true. Through this program, the close-knit relationship between the Party and the people will be firmly bonded when "the Party's will and the people's hearts" are in harmony, and people increasingly trust the leadership of the Party and the governing role of the State."
Being presented with the dream house, in emotion and happiness, Mr. Dang Van Long (Binh Hoa hamlet, My Khanh commune) expressed his deep gratitude to the Party committees, local authorities and benefactors for their care, help and donation of the house. “Previously, my family lived in a makeshift, dilapidated house, life was extremely difficult. With the care and help of the Party committees, authorities and benefactors, my family now has a spacious house. This is not only a place to shelter from the rain and sun, but also an extremely precious gift, filled with human warmth, a great encouragement, helping my family overcome difficulties and rise up in life” - Mr. Dang Van Long was moved.
The success of Long Xuyen City in eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is a vivid demonstration of the spirit of solidarity and “mutual love” of the people of An Giang. This is also a valuable lesson for other localities in the province to learn and follow, so that “no one is left behind”.
According to Long Xuyen City Party Secretary Huynh Quoc Thai, one of the bright spots in the program is the active participation of charity construction teams; Vietnam Fatherland Front Committees at all levels and 12 wards and communes. The process of selecting households to receive support for the removal of temporary and dilapidated houses is through organizing meetings to collect opinions in residential areas. From there, the right beneficiaries are identified, ensuring democracy, publicity and transparency. People who receive houses are also very aware of the purpose and meaning of the program, showing high responsibility, joining hands and contributing with the locality to mobilize more resources to renovate and build more spacious and durable houses through support from relatives and family. Some households have family members who are masons, who have built and repaired them themselves, thereby significantly reducing costs. |
