Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh receives HSBC Group Chairman Mark Tucker

On the afternoon of August 2, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Mr. Mark Tucker, Chairman of HSBC Group (UK) who is visiting and working in Vietnam.

Welcoming the Chairman of HSBC Group to visit Vietnam in the year of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the UK, the Prime Minister hoped and believed that the presence of British banks in Vietnam such as HSBC and Standard Chartered would continue to make positive contributions to fostering the friendly relationship and good and effective cooperation between the two countries.

Expressing gratitude for the support and contributions of HSBC Group and HSBC Bank to the development of the banking and financial sector in particular and the Vietnamese economy in general, the Prime Minister said that Vietnam and HSBC have a special relationship as HSBC has been present here for more than 150 years and in 2009, HSBC was the first foreign bank to establish a legal entity in Vietnam.

The Prime Minister was pleased to learn that HSBC Vietnam has been operating effectively in recent times; regularly participating in dialogues and policy-making with management agencies, actively contributing to further improving the legal system on banking in Vietnam; and welcomed HSBC Vietnam's expansion of investment activities, forming strategic partnerships and cooperation with many corporations, companies and enterprises in both the state and private sectors of Vietnam.

The Prime Minister highly appreciated HSBC’s proactive and coordinated efforts to attract and support international investors in the process of shifting and expanding investment in Vietnam, as well as participating in the Government’s programs to promote economic development. In particular, HSBC has taken practical actions to realize its commitment to green growth and sustainable growth in Vietnam; playing an important role in the Working Group to support capital mobilization for the Vietnam Partnership for a Just Energy Transition.

Highly appreciating HSBC's commitment to arranging up to 12 billion USD in capital to finance sustainable development in Vietnam by 2030, the Prime Minister hoped that HSBC would actively support Vietnam in effectively deploying this resource, helping Vietnam fulfill its commitments to combat climate change and implement sustainable development.

The Prime Minister said that Vietnam had to go through many wars for independence, was embargoed for many years; is a developing country, the economy is in transition. In the context of the world economy facing many difficulties and unpredictable developments as it is now, Vietnam has persisted in its goals and maintained macroeconomic stability, controlled inflation, promoted growth, ensured major balances, controlled budget deficit, reduced government debt, and public debt; along with that, implemented a firm and flexible monetary policy, focusing on growth drivers such as consumption, investment, and export...

The Vietnamese Government hopes that HSBC will continue to provide more active support in arranging and connecting international credit sources to serve energy transition and low-carbon economic development; at the same time, support Vietnam in digital transformation, especially in the banking sector; develop circular economy, sharing economy; share experience in building a team of credit appraisal officers with sufficient professional capacity in the process of granting credit for infrastructure projects, sustainable energy transition in particular, and green projects in general; and supplement necessary capital for areas that are the main driving force for Vietnam's green growth in the coming time.

Agreeing with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's opinions, the Chairman of HSBC Group congratulated Vietnam's achievements in socio-economic development; highly appreciated Vietnam's choice of the right path of green development, including the commitment to reduce net emissions to zero by 2050.

Mr. Mark Tucker informed Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh about the operations and strategies of HSBC Group globally as well as its commitment to invest capacity to support important strategies of the Government, businesses and consumers in Vietnam; the results of implementing HSBC's sustainable credit and green credit programs in Vietnam.

Chairman Mark Tucker said that HSBC will continue to do business long-term, stick with and make positive contributions to the Vietnamese market; he asked the Prime Minister to direct ministries, branches and localities to create favorable conditions and closely cooperate with HSBC to promote development.
