According to reporters on September 2, the buying and selling atmosphere at traditional markets such as Xuan Khanh, Tan An (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city)... was quite busy despite the bad weather.
Preparing goods very early, trader Tran Thi Hai (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) said that despite the slight increase in prices and the rainy weather, the amount of vegetables and tubers sold was 20% higher than usual.
“The market was crowded from morning. Vegetables increased slightly by 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg but still attracted customers due to the demand for food during the holiday. At around 8:30, it started to rain and lasted for many hours. During that time, the number of customers decreased but was still busy. My stall was constantly visited by customers,” said Ms. Hai.
To meet the shopping needs of consumers during the holidays, trader Nguyen Ngoc Han (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) has increased the quantity of imported goods. In particular, pork and chicken prices remain stable, seafood prices have increased from 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.
“During this year’s holiday, meat prices did not fluctuate much, seafood prices increased slightly but were still affordable for consumers. The seafood products that attracted customers during this holiday were giant freshwater prawns priced at VND250,000 - 330,000/kg, live crabs from VND320,000 - 450,000/kg, squid from VND280,000 - 340,000/kg,…”.
According to Ms. Han, business during the 2.9 holiday this year was quite good despite the bad weather: “I thought there would be no more customers when it rained, but many people still went to the market to shop. It is estimated that meat products sold during this holiday are about 30% higher than usual, with seafood being the most popular,” Ms. Han said.
Going to the market in the rain, Ms. Tran Yen Nhi - an office worker (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) was quite surprised when it was past 9 o'clock, Xuan Khanh market was still bustling: "It was raining but there were quite a lot of people shopping. The food at the market today is rich, fresh and delicious, the prices are not much different from normal days".
On the occasion of the holiday, the whole family was present, so Mr. La Tan Tai - a salesman (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) decided to buy food to cook and have a party.
“I planned to go a little late to make the market less crowded, but it rained, making shopping quite inconvenient. The giant freshwater prawns I bought today cost 280,000 VND/kg, an increase of 10,000 VND. The vegetables and mushrooms that go with the hot pot also increased by a few thousand VND/kg each,” said Mr. Tai.
Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned the People's Committees of districts and towns to strengthen the work of ensuring food safety (FS) so that people can feel secure during the Independence Day holiday and focus on directing agencies and functional units to strengthen inspection, examination, and strict handling of organizations and individuals violating the law on FHS in the management area, especially small-scale food production and trading establishments, street food, food service establishments, FHS at markets in the area and subjects under decentralized management.
