Quang Tri fishermen are entering the southern fishing season, but currently young workers in coastal areas have almost stopped working at sea and instead choose to go to big cities and provinces to work or work abroad for higher and more stable income.

In addition, experienced seafarers are getting older and are gradually leaving the seafaring profession. This situation makes it difficult for large-capacity fishing vessel owners to go out to sea to catch seafood.
On each trip out to sea, with a capacity of 410 CV, the fishing boat of Mr. Luong Van Hau in Cua Viet town, Gio Linh district needs about 15 crew members. Recently, due to a lack of people, his boat only has 10-12 workers for each trip out to sea. The shortage of labor has caused the productivity and output of seafood caught by his boat to decrease significantly compared to before. Mr. Hau said that hiring local labor is very difficult at present.
Although the locality has a large number of offshore fishing vessels in the province, in Cua Viet town today, most families invest in sending their children to work abroad or study abroad, so the number of young people aged 18-45 at home is very small. According to statistics, Quang Tri province currently has more than 2,300 vessels of all kinds with a total capacity of over 120,000 CV, including 230 offshore vessels with modern equipment. Currently, the number of workers in the fisheries industry is over 6,000 people.
However, according to the authorities, the number of crew members is constantly changing and there is a disturbance, some of them have not even been trained. Fishermen in coastal areas of the province are currently entering the southern fishing season - the main fishing season of the year, so the demand for labor in the fishing industry is becoming more urgent.
It is known that to solve immediate needs, many ship owners have hired laborers from neighboring localities such as Quang Binh, Da Nang, Quang Ngai... Owners of large-capacity fishing boats in Quang Tri province said that currently, their crews have an income of 10 - 12 million VND after each sea trip of about half a month.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Huu Vinh said: Faced with the shortage of seafood exploitation workers, the department has assigned its affiliated units to coordinate with coastal localities to strengthen information and propaganda, promote the role of the profession and the advantages of the locality to make efforts to participate in sea labor to maintain the profession, increase adherence to the sea, and protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands.
