Optimistic signals from the beginning of the year have led to a forecast of a prosperous year for the pepper industry. As global pepper output is likely to continue to decline, while consumption demand remains stable, Vietnamese pepper is facing a "golden opportunity" this year, creating a strong driving force to promote the development of the industry.

Major markets such as the US, Europe and the Middle East continue to increase pepper imports to meet consumer and food processing needs, bringing great opportunities for Vietnamese pepper exporters.

Mr. Nguyen Quy Duong - Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that Vietnam has favorable climate and soil conditions, and is the world's largest pepper production and export center. In 2024, Vietnam's pepper growing area will reach 110,500 hectares, with an average yield of 26 quintals/ha, double the global average (12.7 quintals/ha), with a total output of about 200,000 tons. Pepper export turnover in 2024 will reach 1.32 billion USD, making an important contribution to Vietnam's agricultural economy.

The pepper development orientation to 2030 sets a target of a stable pepper growing area of about 80,000 - 100,000 hectares, with an output of 200,000 - 230,000 tons. At the same time, about 40% of the pepper growing area will meet international standards such as GAP, VietGAP and GlobalGAP. The development of organic pepper growing areas is also being focused on, with the goal of reaching 5,000 hectares by 2030, accounting for 5% of the pepper growing area.

The Vietnamese pepper industry is currently facing a great opportunity for sustainable development, with the participation of large domestic and foreign enterprises. Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that enterprises are shifting to developing deeply processed products, increasing export value. However, the pepper industry still faces many challenges, from climate change, pressure from harmful organisms, increasingly strict quality requirements from the international market, to high transportation costs.

According to Thehindubusinessline , India's pepper output in 2024-25 is expected to decline due to shrinking cultivation area and adverse weather affecting production.

According to the government's first preliminary estimate, pepper output could fall by 38% to just 78,000 tonnes compared to 126,000 tonnes last year. At the same time, pepper growing area is estimated to fall to 255,000 hectares compared to 313,000 hectares last year.

Meanwhile, Kishore Shamji, director of the Indian Pepper and Spices Trade Association, estimated pepper production this year at around 75,000 tonnes due to the impact of climate change on agricultural production. He also said that the Ministry of Agriculture and the Spices Board have reported a remaining pepper stock of 50,000 tonnes, taking the total available pepper in the domestic market to 125,000 tonnes.

At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,321 USD/ton, up 0.76%; the price of Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at 6,900 USD/ton; the price of Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at 9,800 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price is 10,283 USD/ton, up 0.3%; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 12,300 USD/ton.

Vietnam black pepper price is traded at 7,000 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 7,200 USD/ton; white pepper price at 10,000 USD/ton.

IPC adjusted up Indonesian pepper prices at the beginning of the week.
