What is the difference between the floor score and the benchmark score?
Dr. Nguyen Van Kha, Deputy Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that the floor score and the benchmark score can be the same or different depending on the school. In which, the floor score is the minimum score to receive applications, but the benchmark score depends on the quota and the status of candidates' applications to each specific major. Some majors will have the same benchmark score as the floor score, but some majors will have it much higher. Candidates can refer to these scores at schools in recent years. Particularly at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, Dr. Kha said that this year, the floor score of the school's majors is expected to not change much compared to last year.
Speaking further about the difference between the floor score and the benchmark score, Mr. Vu Quang Huy, Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, analyzed: "The floor score is the minimum score that a candidate is eligible to apply for. From the candidates who are eligible to register for a major, the admissions council of the schools will select candidates with scores from high to low until the quota is met. The lowest score that a candidate is admitted to the major is the benchmark score. Depending on the major, the benchmark score can be equal to the floor score or higher."
Regarding the floor score of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Mr. Huy said that in 2023, the floor score of the school's majors will be from 16-19 points. Some majors of the school had quite high benchmark scores last year, and this year is expected to be similar: multimedia communications, public relations, information technology, graphic design, etc.
Master Dinh Cong Vien Phuong, Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Van Hien University, said that in previous years, the school's minimum score was usually 15 points or more, and this year it is expected to not change much. However, the standard scores for each major will depend on the actual situation of candidates submitting their applications. Like last year, the standard scores for each major at the school were based on high school graduation exam scores at many different levels, with some majors reaching 23-24 points.

To be officially admitted, what do early admitted candidates need to do?
Regarding early admission candidates, Dr. Nguyen Van Kha analyzed: "Early admission is an admission method that is not based on high school graduation exam scores, such as: considering academic records, considering competency assessment exam scores, priority admission... It can be said that early admission creates many advantages for candidates in admission and reduces exam pressure".
However, Dr. Kha noted that even though they have been admitted early, candidates still need to follow the registration steps on the Ministry of Education and Training's information portal like candidates who have not been admitted early. The difference is that candidates who have been admitted early only need to put the major they are eligible for in their first choice to be sure of being admitted. Meanwhile, candidates who have not been admitted early still have to rely on the specific admission situation of that major.
Adding more information, Master Dinh Cong Vien Phuong also said that on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission portal, candidates who are admitted early only need to choose 1 major that meets the admission requirements to place their first choice, and will definitely be officially admitted. However, candidates who are admitted early can still be "empty-handed" if they fail to graduate from high school and do not complete the steps to register the major they have been admitted early on the Ministry's system. Therefore, candidates need to pay attention to performing all the steps to register their wishes, pay fees and confirm their wishes on the system in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training within the prescribed time.
Warning candidates who were admitted early, Mr. Vu Quang Huy recounted: "Last year, there was a candidate who wanted to study at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology but placed his first choice at another school. Once he was admitted to his first choice at another school, the candidate would not be considered for his second choice at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. In the end, the candidate fell into a situation where he was admitted but not as expected."
From there, Mr. Huy advised candidates to pay close attention when placing their application preferences. "Just remember that the major you want to study most should be your first choice and the remaining majors should be in descending order of priority. Although according to the regulations, candidates who are admitted in the first round but do not want to enroll still have the right to refuse to confirm their admission. However, not all schools will consider additional admission in the next round. If the admission score is at least equal to that of the first round or higher," the representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology added.
