Egypt on March 2 rejected efforts to form an opposition government in Sudan, warning that such moves threatened the "unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity" of the war-torn country.

Sudan has been embroiled in fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for nearly two years, plunging the country into what the United Nations has described as one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history.

A week ago, the RSF and its allies signed an agreement in Kenya, declaring the formation of a “government of peace and unity” in areas under their control.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on March 2: "Egypt expresses its opposition to any attempt to threaten the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of brotherly Sudan, including attempts to establish a parallel Sudanese government."

Such actions “complicate the situation in Sudan, hinder ongoing efforts to agree on a political plan and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis,” the statement added.

Egypt also called on "all forces in Sudan to prioritize the country's supreme national interests and actively participate in launching an inclusive political (peace) process without any external exclusion or interference".

Earlier, on February 28, the governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres rejected the intention to form an opposition government in Sudan - a move that is believed to be able to worsen the division in the conflict-ridden East African country.

In a statement posted on the X platform, the Saudi Foreign Ministry rejected "any illegal steps or measures taken outside the framework of the official institutions of the Republic of Sudan, which could affect the unity of the country and do not reflect the will of the people, including the call for the establishment of a parallel government."

"The Kingdom reaffirms its steadfast stance in supporting the security, stability and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan," the statement said.

Riyadh also called on all relevant parties in Sudan to put national interests above sectarian interests and avoid the risk of division and chaos.

In addition, Saudi Arabia also pledged to continue its efforts to end the war and promote peace, in accordance with the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023.
