Thailand coach makes unprecedented strong statement
In the first leg of the semi-final, which took place at Rizal Memorial Stadium (Philippines, December 27), the Philippines surprisingly defeated Thailand 2-1. After 52 years, the Thai team lost to the Philippines in an official match. However, the opportunity to continue is still intact for the "War Elephants" when they play the second leg at Rajamangala Stadium. Thai media assessed that the recent defeat was more like an "accident" than a technical weakness. Therefore, the rematch will be the time for Thailand to demonstrate its strength and affirm itself as the number 1 candidate for the championship.
Appearing at a press conference on the afternoon of December 29, coach Masatada Ishii expressed: “In the first leg, I regret that the Thai team lost. We have to quickly stand up and return to our original image. What Thailand has done well, we will continue to improve. Although we do not have time to practice, we have held many meetings, pointing out the mistakes that need to be corrected.”
The Japanese coach added more details: “The two goals conceded in the first leg were carefully studied. After reviewing the tape, we discussed and analyzed them to come up with appropriate defensive exercises. All the Thai players were very focused and we will definitely not concede goals in such a way again.”
Coach Masatada Ishii declared that Thailand will return to its original form in the second leg.
Notably, after the 1-2 defeat in the first leg, the Thai media criticized coach Masatada Ishii's use of players. When asked about the changes in the second leg, coach Masatada Ishii frankly said: "My assistants and I have discussed and there will definitely be changes in the next match. Every player on the field must keep their desire to defeat the Philippines. In the AFF Cup, each team must carefully calculate for each match. The situation right now is that the Philippines has an advantage over Thailand. However, with only a 1-goal advantage, Thailand can completely turn things around. Everyone is still doing very well and I believe that in tomorrow's match, Thailand will win."
'Thailand will make the Philippines cry'
Appearing with coach Masatada Ishii at the press conference on the afternoon of December 29, defender Chalermsak Aukkee confidently declared: “When Thailand lost to the Philippines, I realized that not only the players but all the fans were also very sad and disappointed. That's why we want to win the second leg to be in the final. I remember that after the first leg, the Philippines beat Thailand and they were so happy that they cried. And in this second leg, I think the Philippines will cry again. We will regain our image. They will have to cry. However, it's not because they are too happy, but because the Philippines was defeated by Thailand and did not make it to the final."
Chalermsak Aukkee affirms that Thailand (in white shirt) will defeat the Philippines and reach the final.
Chalermsak Aukkee also pointed out how Thailand solved the problem after the first leg: “Thailand had important meetings to see what mistakes they made in the first leg. Thailand has many new players, who are joining the national team for the first time, so mistakes are inevitable. However, head coach Masatada Ishii has corrected and had effective training sessions. In addition, the experienced players in the team all tried to promote their roles, encouraging the young players. I am sure Thailand will overcome the difficulties in the second leg and defeat the Philippines.”
