On the current World Billiards Federation (UMB) rankings, Tran Quyet Chien (world No. 5) is only 18 points behind Marco Zanetti (Italy) at No. 2. Not only that, the two positions above the Vietnamese player, Dick Jaspers (Netherlands) and Torbjorn Blomdahl (Sweden), are not too big and the competition for the world No. 2 position in the 2023 season becomes much more attractive at the Sharm El Sheikh World Cup.
Tran Quyet Chien has the opportunity to make history for Vietnamese billiards.
To make history for Vietnamese billiards, Tony Tran (nickname of Tran Quyet Chien) needs to reach the final and hope that players competing for the world's number 2 position such as Zanetti, Jaspers, Blomdahl or Eddy Merckx (Belgium, world number 6) cannot achieve high results in the tournament.
Tran Quyet Chien will begin his quest for the world No. 2 spot at 5:00 p.m. on December 7 (Vietnam time) in the round for the 32 strongest players of the tournament. Tran Quyet Chien's first opponent in Group E will be Kim Jun-tea (Korea, ranked 13th in the world). The remaining opponent will be determined after the end of the 4th qualifying round.
Bao Phuong Vinh determined to seek first title at World Cup
Another Vietnamese player, the reigning world champion Bao Phuong Vinh (ranked 9th in the world), is also in the round of 32 and is in Group G with Eddy Merckx (Belgium, ranked 6th in the world). The 1995-born Vietnamese player will also compete at the same time as his senior Tran Quyet Chien.
Today, December 4, Dao Van Ly and Doan Minh Kiet will compete in the second qualifying round. Player Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu will compete in the third qualifying round and Chiem Hong Tai and Tran Thanh Luc will participate in the fourth qualifying round. The Sharm El Sheikh 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup will take place from December 3 to 9 in Egypt.
