The section from Km13+390 – Km18+400 of National Highway (QL) 8 often has cracked and broken manhole covers, causing water to stagnate in the ditch. According to observations, the areas with broken manhole covers are about 1m long and 40cm wide; some areas have broken manhole covers in long rows of up to 3m. This situation causes loss of aesthetics, turns the drainage into a garbage dump and affects people's travel.
Designed as a closed, non-load-bearing longitudinal drainage ditch (not bearing the weight of cars), this area often has vehicles carrying materials for households building houses or cars stopping and parking on the sidewalk and longitudinal ditch, causing the manhole cover to break and collapse.
Many manhole covers were broken and collapsed on Highway 8 through Duc Tho district.
According to information from Road Management Office II.3 (Road Management Area II – Vietnam Road Administration), there are currently about 21 locations in Duc Tho that are frequently damaged by manhole covers. These locations are mostly located in areas where households are building houses and some companies and shops have large trucks frequently coming and going.
Broken manhole covers make sewers a dumping ground for garbage.
Currently, some broken and sunken manhole covers have been marked with stakes and warning ropes by the management unit to avoid accidents for the people. However, this is only a temporary solution.
“This situation has been going on for a long time and has not been completely resolved, so people are quite upset. The uncovered sewers give off a foul smell and pose a potential risk of traffic accidents at night,” said Mr. PVK (a resident of Duc Tho town).
The functional unit planted stakes and stretched wires at the point where the manhole cover had collapsed.
“The unit has replaced broken covers and dredged the ditches many times. However, after a short time, damage occurred again. For damaged areas at the entrances to households and businesses, we have asked them to repair and replace them, but some households have not done so yet.
The Road Management Office II.3 has requested the People's Committee of Duc Tho district to direct relevant agencies to regularly inspect, handle and detect vehicle owners and business households that violate the law. In addition, it is necessary to study more plans to receive information and images from security cameras to detect those who cause damage and request timely remediation," said Mr. Vo Truong Giang - Head of the Road Management Office II.3.
