This move by Millon was strongly promoted after the auction house successfully sold the Emperor's golden seal to Vietnam.
The information was shared by Mr. Alexandre Millon - President of Millon Auction House, France - with the media on April 19 in Hanoi.
From the case of the Emperor's Golden Seal
Mr. Alexandre said that after the "deal" of the Emperor's Golden Seal, Millon realized that Vietnamese people have a great desire to repatriate Vietnamese antiques and works of art that are scattered around the world.
The sale of the Emperor's Golden Seal was extremely difficult, but Millon witnessed the great enthusiasm of the Vietnamese Government and individuals who wanted to bring this treasure back to the country.
From the original three heirs of the golden seal, the number later increased to 16. Reaching an agreement on the price with that many owners was not simple.
The working group of the Vietnamese Government and representatives of the private Nam Hong Museum and the Millon auction house had three days of negotiations before reaching an agreement between the parties.
The golden seal was brought to Vietnam at the end of 2023.
Through this deal, and given the fact that 95% of Vietnamese antiques and works auctioned at international auction houses are purchased by Vietnamese people, Millon decided to open a representative office in Vietnam so that Vietnamese people can easily participate directly in auctions without having to go to France.
Hope the Vietnamese art auction market will be more professional
The two partners that Millon cooperated with to open Millon Vietnam are Lac Viet Auction Joint Stock Company and Viet Art View. Currently, the procedures are being completed.
Ms. Do Thi Hong Hanh - General Director of Lac Viet Auction Company - said that in recent years, the company has been "immersed in art auctions", struggling too much because the professionalism in auctions in Vietnam is not high, the auctions have encountered many difficulties in terms of techniques, civility in auctions...
Therefore, she hopes that with the appearance of international auction houses in Vietnam, the art auction market in Vietnam will gradually become more professional.
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Alexandre Millon said that when Millon Vietnam is established, art auctions will be organized in duplex form - connecting both Vietnam and France at the same time.
Of course, the auctions comply with the laws of both countries.
To prepare for the Vietnamese market, on April 20, Millon will hold a separate auction for Vietnamese works, held in France, connecting with Vietnam.
According to Mr. Alexandre, Millon auction house, France has a history of nearly 100 years, and has auctioned artifacts that are 5,000 years old.
This auction house publishes three catalogs a year.
Starting to auction Vietnamese artifacts and works for 10 years, in 2021, Millon successfully auctioned the lacquer painting Phnom Penh Landscape of Cambodia by painter Le Quoc Loc for more than 1.2 million euros.
In addition, many valuable works by Pham Hau, Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam, Mai Trung Thu... were also successfully auctioned at high prices.
