On May 24, information from the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that the unit had received a notice from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) on the results of reviewing the remedial records of durian growing area codes and facilities that failed the online inspection in January.

Vietnam has 47 growing area codes and 18 durian packing facilities qualified to export to China.

Accordingly, Vietnam has had 47/51 growing areas and 18 packaging facilities that meet the requirements and have been granted export codes by GACC to China. In addition, 4 growing area records that have not met the requirements are due to insufficient information and unclear images, so GACC cannot evaluate the improvement.

According to the Plant Protection Department, up to now, Vietnam has 293 growing areas and 115 durian packing facilities that have been granted official export codes to this market by China. In addition, the Plant Protection Department is working with GACC to agree on the next online inspection schedule for about 400 growing areas and 60 durian packing facilities that have submitted documents to China.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance), durian is the fruit with the highest export growth in the fruit and vegetable industry in the first 3 months of the year. Specifically, the export value of durian in the first quarter reached 153 million USD, an increase of 8.3 times compared to the same period last year. Of which, durian exported to China accounted for 83%.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that having more codes for growing areas and durian packing facilities approved by China is good news for durian growers and exporters. This is a favorable condition for Vietnamese enterprises to increase the output and export value of durian to China in the remaining months of this year, when the demand from this market is very large.

Improve durian quality to compete with Thailand

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen said that in the Chinese market, Vietnamese durian has the advantage of abundant output, year-round harvest and faster shipping time to China than Thailand. However, the Thai durian industry has developed decades before Vietnam. They are very strong in preservation technology, product quality, many good varieties and recently continued to raise the quality standards of exported durian.

Specifically, Thai durian exported to China must have a minimum dry matter content of 35%, higher than the previous 32%. According to this standard, durian will have less water, firmer and tastier segments. This move by Thailand is considered a factor to compete directly with Vietnamese durian in the Chinese market.

In addition, Thailand also applies regulations to punish those who cut durian for export if they intentionally cut unripe fruit, which is not ripe enough, because it will affect the quality and national brand of this fruit.

"Thai durian industry is decades ahead of Vietnam, they have good varieties, and their products have brands. To compete with them in the Chinese market, we must focus on investing to improve quality, design as well as build a brand for durian," said Mr. Nguyen.

According to GACC statistics, in 2022, China spent about 4 billion USD to import durian. Of which, Thailand was the largest supplier with 3.85 billion USD, accounting for about 96% of China's durian import turnover. However, since July 2022, Vietnamese durian began to be officially exported to the Chinese market, the output has increased rapidly. Most recently, in January, China granted the Philippines a license to export durian to this country.
