Fresh green vegetables in this district of Long An have been in low price for over a month now, farmers are not only making a profit but also losing money.

Since the beginning of June, farmers growing vegetables of all kinds in Can Giuoc district, Long An province have not yet had time to enjoy a good harvest but have had to worry because the selling price is too low, not enough to cover production costs.

These days, the vegetable growing areas in the upper communes of the district have seen households "abandoning" their vegetables without harvesting them because prices have dropped sharply and they don't have enough money to hire workers.

Mr. Ho Van Duc's green mustard (right cover), My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An province, is ready for harvest but vegetable prices have dropped sharply.

In My Loc commune, Mr. Ho Van Duc (Loc Trung hamlet) planted 3,000m2 of green mustard greens but traders only paid less than 3,000 VND/kg. At this price, his family lost millions of VND per 1,000m2.

“The price of vegetables has fallen in general, but the price of mustard greens has been low for the past month. The mustard greens have a high yield but the price has hit rock bottom, making me sad and not wanting to go to the fields. But because my family’s economy has always depended on growing vegetables, I have to try even if I lose money.”

Not far from Mr. Duc's vegetable field, nearly 3,000 square meters of melons of Mr. Nguyen Tan Son's family (Loc Trung hamlet) also have no traders coming to buy.

Mr. Son said: “This year’s weather is complicated, with prolonged drought, agricultural production is facing difficulties. Agricultural materials are increasing while vegetable prices have recently dropped too low,… I also hope that the relevant agencies will have solutions to support farmers so that agricultural output is stable.”

Currently, the vegetable growing area in Can Giuoc district ranges from 1,400ha to 1,700ha, with an output of about 68,500 tons. Of which, 1,325ha is used for high-tech vegetable production.

It is known that recently the weather has been favorable, vegetables have grown strongly, high productivity so supply exceeds demand, while the consumption market has stagnated so vegetable prices have dropped sharply.

Therefore, farmers need to carefully research the market to develop appropriate production and business plans, avoiding the current situation of "good harvest, low price".
