On October 24, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Tourism said it had received complaints from 15 accommodation establishments that had fake fanpages set up by bad guys, including famous hotels and resorts.

Summon account owner "Cherry Thao"

According to the Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Tourism, currently, some individuals often choose 4-5 star hotels and resorts located in prime locations, near Tran Phu coastal road (Nha Trang city) to create fake pages on social networks and run advertisements to confuse customers and trick them into paying for their rooms.

Vinpearl hotel system has 3 fake Fanpages. A series of other 3-5 star hotels are also in the same situation, such as: InterContinental Nha Trang, Havana Nha Trang, Masova Nha Trang, Grand Gosia, Ana Mandara Cam Ranh...

The Department of Tourism said that the fake pages often use the hotel's posts and change the phone number at the end, asking customers to book rooms via Fanpage or deposit 50%. When approaching customers, they enthusiastically advise and urge them to transfer money. After the customers transfer money, these people do not provide the service as agreed. Only when checking that their name is not in the system do customers realize they have been scammed. The scammers then stop answering the phone or block communication.

The Department of Tourism determined that these were systematic tricks and actions that occurred many times with many different organizations and individuals. These subjects took advantage of customers' trust with the purpose of appropriating money.

Regarding this incident, on September 27, the Lao Dong Newspaper published an article titled “Impersonating a series of hotels to commit fraud”. Immediately afterwards, the leaders of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee requested the authorities to investigate and handle the case.

According to the report of Khanh Hoa Provincial Police, to date, the authorities have recorded 16 customers being scammed by the hotel's fake Fanpage with a total amount of 47.6 million VND. The Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention - Khanh Hoa Provincial Police has requested network operators to provide information of subscribers and the operating status of phone numbers. The police also requested banks to provide account opening records and transactions of the scammers for further investigation and handling.

Regarding the case of a social network account named “Thảo Cherry” defrauding customers to book rooms in Nha Trang as reported by the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, since August 22, the Tourist Support Center - Khanh Hoa Province Tourism Promotion Center has received complaints from tourists about their property being appropriated in the form of deposits for tourism services. The Tourism Promotion Center has sent an official dispatch to Khanh Hoa Province Police requesting to resolve the case.

The Nha Trang City Police Department has worked with and recorded statements from Nguyen Thi Thu Thao (“Cherry Thao”) and continued to consolidate documents and evidence. The Police Department has also exchanged documents with Ninh Hoa Town Police about receiving documents to handle Thao’s fraudulent property appropriation.

Raise awareness

Speaking to a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Mong Tuong Ny, Deputy Director of Havana Nha Trang Hotel, said that despite the continuous reports from the press and the hotel's repeated warnings, tourists have still been scammed. The hotel has reported to the Department of Tourism that four more tourists were scammed out of more than VND8 million when booking rooms through a fake Fanpage.

Havana Hotel has discovered 5 fake Fanpages and posted information to alert customers. “We hope that the Department of Tourism, the Provincial Police and other relevant agencies will take timely and strong measures to end this situation,” Ms. Ny suggested.

In order to protect the legitimate rights and interests of tourists and prevent further incidents that affect the image of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa tourism, Mr. Cung Quynh Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism, has sent an urgent document to relevant agencies, units and businesses, requesting them to raise their vigilance against the methods and tricks of bad guys.

“When detecting a fake Fanpage, businesses need to report in writing to the Department of Information and Communications for timely prevention. In addition, tourism businesses must provide information about the official Fanpage of the unit widely on mass media so that people know and contact them” – the leader of the Department of Tourism emphasized.

Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Tourism also requested Nha Trang Tourism Association to coordinate with the provincial police and the Department of Information and Communications to organize a conference to propagate anti-fraud and provide information on safety and network security in the tourism business sector for businesses.
