(CLO) For journalists and multimedia newsrooms today, artificial intelligence (AI) has greatly helped in the operations and production and publishing processes. In the genre of photojournalism, AI has actively participated in supporting the work of journalists, but the big question is where is the boundary between the attractive content of the photo and the ethics of journalists.
Great support for reporters and photo editors
In fact, AI has become a powerful assistant for journalists and press agencies to use in data mining, image analysis, content writing, etc. In the work of creating digital content, AI can support journalists in post-processing photos, post-processing videos, graphics, collecting and analyzing data, suggesting writing styles for reference, and suggesting ways to create titles.
Using AI to redraw portraits of martyrs and heroic Vietnamese mothers or using AI to talk about the origin of the ancient Duoi Village.
Many press and television agencies have applied AI to their daily activities, even to major events and programs. For example, in the program "Tet means hope" in 2024, the program production team of Vietnam Television (VTV) used AI to redraw portraits of martyrs and heroic Vietnamese mothers. The story began in Chin Chu hamlet, Dien An commune, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province, where 17 martyrs and 7 heroic Vietnamese mothers died.
However, there are many families who still do not have a memorial photo for their loved ones. In the program "Tet means hope", the VTV crew coordinated with a project unit using AI to recreate photos of martyrs and heroic Vietnamese mothers, so that they have the opportunity to return to reunite with their families...
Or recently, in the program “Weekend Meeting” which returned after 19 years, the Television Film Center, VTV used AI to draw pictures recreating the origin of the old Duoi Village. Many images of the countryside, the ferry, and the old communal house yard appeared, helping the audience have interesting experiences and visualizations of the old village picture that has disappeared.
It can be easily seen that in the photojournalism genre, AI applications that have been continuously developed recently have greatly supported reporters and photo editors in their work, processing and publishing.
Using AI and software is so powerful that it can transform every element in a frame. We can adjust color, light, contrast, apply special effects and arrange visual elements to create a complete photo that is compatible with the subject being worked on.
However, everything has two sides. Nowadays, when we hold a magazine, we can easily see images of models with fair, bright skin without any blemishes appearing on the cover of a magazine. In many events, the same shooting angle but the images appearing in different newspapers have slightly different background arrangements due to intentional AI intervention. This sometimes distorts the nature and content of the image's message, leading to public discussion and public reaction.
The number one requirement is honesty.
In fact, in an era where phones have become so familiar, users have unwittingly become victims of image manipulation. The fast and continuous scrolling of their phones makes them easily fooled by AI-generated images.

Of course, the benefits that AI tools bring to journalists in photography cannot be denied. Thanks to technology, press photos that reach readers will be more beautiful, sharper, and more aesthetically pleasing.
Sharing with reporters of the Journalists and Public Opinion Newspaper about the application of AI in making press photos, journalist Ngo Huy Hoang - Photo Editor, Thieu Nien Tien Phong and Nhi Dong Newspaper shared: Unlike commercial and artistic photos, press photos have their own standards that journalists must adhere to. The number one requirement is honesty. Because in essence, press photos are products that provide information in images. When it comes to information, it needs to be accurate and objective.
“However, in the somewhat fierce competition of modern media and the context of the development of the press economy that governs the existence of newsrooms today. The blending of press photos, commercial photos and art photos in press works sometimes makes us forget our boundaries by using AI to intervene too deeply in the content of the work. This is somewhat a violation of the ethics of journalists,” emphasized journalist Ngo Huy Hoang.
This reality shows that whether or not it is appropriate, the use of AI should be at a moderate level to make the characters and background brighter, sharper, and more beautiful, but absolutely not change the characters' emotions, background details, and the content that needs to be reflected. When there is deep intervention of AI, there should be clear annotations to avoid misunderstandings and reader reactions.
It can be affirmed that using AI in photojournalism will be an indispensable part in today's digital age. Using it appropriately will help journalists and editorial offices improve their work efficiency and attract readers. On the contrary, abusing them can cause mixed reactions from the public, even a crisis of confidence. Because no technological power can overcome the professional conscience and ethics of journalists.
