"Suffocating" with garbage
An Vinh village beach, Tinh Ky commune, Quang Ngai city is like a small bay and is one of the beautiful beaches of Quang Ngai province. However, every rainy season, garbage from upstream rivers flows down and washes up here.
Garbage floats on the edge of the waves, piled up in many layers on the shore, emitting a foul smell. Many people here said that every rainy season, they have to live with garbage. Mr. Ho Thanh, a resident of An Vinh village, Tinh Ky commune, said, “Just a week ago, there was heavy rain, we cleaned up all the garbage, now after only 2 days of heavy rain, the waves have washed the garbage all over the beach.
“There is more and more trash, covering the entire coastline. Now, to get to the sea, you have to go through the trash. Every rainy and stormy season, big waves and high tides will carry a large amount of trash to the shore, making the once clean beach polluted,” said Mr. Thanh.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong, a resident of An Vinh village, Tinh Ky commune, said that after heavy rains, garbage from upstream rivers washed up on the coast of An Vinh village, stretching hundreds of meters. The garbage was mainly nylon bags, plastic waste, dry firewood, water hyacinth, etc., piled up in a long pile along the coast.
“This situation has been going on for decades. In recent years, thanks to regular collection and treatment, there has been some improvement, but it recurs every rainy season. I really hope the government will have a fundamental solution,” Mr. Chuong said indignantly.
Sustainable solutions are needed
To solve the environmental pollution in the Bai Sau beach area, every year, the Tinh Ky commune government and organizations, teams, and volunteer groups in the province organize a campaign to clean up the beach. However, as scheduled, during the rainy season, garbage from other places is washed ashore by the waves, causing pollution.
To return the beach to a clean state, in recent days, many union members, youths, workers, civil servants, and police, military, and militia forces have collected garbage at An Vinh village beach. After the launch, nearly 100 tons of garbage were collected and taken away for treatment. Quang Ngai Urban Environment Joint Stock Company mobilized 50 workers, 3 excavators, a loader, and 5 compactors to collect garbage from Tinh Ky beach, joining hands with the locality to make the environment greener - cleaner - more beautiful.
People living in An Vinh village expressed their desire to have a breakwater to prevent waste from upstream. However, to thoroughly handle the source of waste dumped into the sea, in the long term, it is necessary for the whole community to join hands in raising awareness and responsibility for environmental protection. Only then can we overcome the situation of coastal pollution during each rainy and stormy season. "People gathered together to clean up but it was too much. Now the only way to avoid this situation is to build an outer embankment," said Mr. Dang Lu (An Vinh village).
It is known that Quang Ngai has 130 km of coastline, including many coastal residential areas that are attacked by garbage, causing serious environmental pollution. Not only in the sea of Tinh Ky commune, for many years, the sea of Sa Ky port in Binh Chau commune has always faced the situation of garbage flooding, greatly affecting people's lives and tourism activities. In the embankment areas, ferry piers... garbage floats on the water surface or washes ashore in thick layers. The garbage is mainly foam, plastic and household waste. Local authorities have repeatedly propagated and prevented people from dumping garbage in this area but have been powerless.
“Many people lack awareness and dump garbage indiscriminately, the sea is like a trash can, on the shore they throw it into the water, on boats they also throw it into the sea, causing pollution to occur frequently, giving off a very bad smell, causing discomfort to passersby and greatly affecting people's lives. In particular, household garbage is washed into people's houses by the waves,” said Mr. Le Van Ai, a resident of Binh Chau commune.
It is thought that the pollution situation in coastal areas in Quang Ngai has been going on for quite a long time and is seriously threatening the environment, affecting the landscape as well as the daily life of the people. Therefore, people living in coastal areas are still hoping and waiting for a truly effective solution from the local government to end the situation of living with waste for a long time.
