In the year since their last meeting in Indonesia, relations between the world's two leading powers have been through many ups and downs and at times hit new lows due to new situations that have arisen, as well as long-standing issues between the two sides.

This time, the two leaders of the world's two leading superpowers met on American soil, at the Filoli Mansion in San Francisco, on November 15 local time, to continue managing their differences.

“I appreciate today’s conversation with President Xi because I think it’s critically important that we understand each other clearly as leaders,” Biden said in a tweet during the summit. “There are important global challenges that require our shared leadership. And today, we made real progress.”

In a more recent post on X, President Biden praised what he called a “constructive” summit with President Xi Jinping.

“I just finished a full day of meetings with President Xi and I believe it was one of the most productive and constructive discussions we have ever had,” the US President wrote on X. “We have built a foundation over the past several months of diplomacy between our two countries and have made important progress.”

The post also included images of a meeting between Mr Biden and Mr Xi along with top administration officials.

For his part, during the meeting, Xi noted that the China-US relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and it needs to be viewed and envisioned in the broader context of accelerating global changes that have not been seen in a century. According to the Chinese leader, the relationship needs to be developed in a way that “benefits the two peoples and fulfills our responsibility for the progress of mankind.”

According to the Chinese leader, the bilateral relationship has never been smooth sailing in the past 50 years and it has always faced one problem or another, but it has continued to move forward amid the twists and turns.

For two major countries like China and the United States, turning away from each other is not an option. It is unrealistic for one side to imitate the other's model, and conflict and confrontation will only bring unpredictable consequences for both sides.

“Planet Earth is big enough for two countries to succeed, and the success of one country is an opportunity for the other,” Xi said, stressing that competition between major countries is not a common trend today and cannot solve the problems facing China, the United States or the world as a whole .
