The place name Po Hen in Hai Son commune (Mong Cai city) is a very special name, known as an epic of the war to protect the border. Po Hen is even more famous when there are many literary and artistic works written about this land to pay tribute to the sacrifice of martyrs.
The most important were musical compositions. At the end of February 1979, artists were suggested that, in addition to the collective praises of the brave fighting units to protect every inch of the Fatherland, they should remember to praise the examples of individuals who faced the enemy and sacrificed heroically for the country and the people. The example of Hoang Thi Hong Chiem at the Quang Ninh border is a typical example. With civic responsibility, love for the Fatherland and admiration for the sacrifices of the martyrs, the musicians were very sensitive in composing. Among them, Pham Tuyen wrote the song "Fight for independence and freedom" very quickly, musician Ho Bac completed the song "Rose on the fulcrum" early, musician The Song wrote "Song on the top of Po Hen"...
The following days also included songs: “Singing about my Fatherland” by musician Huu Xuan, “The eyes carry the shape of bullets” by musician Tran Tien, “Goodbye when leaving” by musician Vu Trong Hoi, “Border sim flowers” by musician Minh Quang, “40 centuries together in battle” by musician Hong Dang…
Martyr Hoang Thi Hong Chiem is the person mentioned most in the outstanding songs of musicians Pham Tuyen, Dan Huyen, The Song, Tran Minh... These are songs such as: "There is a Hong Chiem flower" by musician Pham Tuyen, "The song on the top of Po Hen" by musician The Song performed by People's Artist Le Dung; "Hong Chiem flower" by musician Dan Huyen sung by Meritorious Artist Kieu Hung or "The girl on the top of Po Hen" by musician Tran Minh performed by singer Tuyet Nhung... These works are all songs recorded in the collection "The song goes with the years"...
Musician Dan Huyen wrote “Bong hoa Hong Chiem” using the folk song of the Northern mountainous region, praising the heroic martyr of the beloved Quang Ninh land, including the line: “Beside the star anise, the fragrant cinnamon flowers of the border forest”. Or like in the song “Co mot doa Hong Chiem”, musician Pham Tuyen wrote: “...There are gentle flowers that are not brilliant, but the fragrance is forever lasting and never fades. There are simple but pure lives, suggesting to us a wonderfully beautiful way of life...”.
Although not born and raised in Quang Ninh, musician The Song is always passionate about Quang Ninh as his second hometown. He wrote the song "Song on Po Hen Peak" about the brave fighting spirit of Quang Ninh border guards and female trader Hoang Thi Hong Chiem. The song was performed by excellent singers such as: People's Artist Le Dung, Mining Region Artist Thanh Viet.
"Song on the top of Po Hen" and "Far Island" are both written about Quang Ninh and are a group of songs that helped him receive the 4th State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2017. The song has the following verse: "There is a beautiful rose of Chiem / Under the golden sunlight, the village shows its beauty / That rose is the name / And its fragrance lasts forever / The loyal girl / Her life sets a shining example / Carrying within her the spirit of Trung Vuong / Beautiful, gentle but stubborn / For the country / She has become a brave warrior / An example of destroying the enemy to protect Quang Ninh land".
The flow of music written about Po Hen has been and is continuing until now and forever. Musician Nguyen Xuan Nhat, member of the Vietnam Musicians Association, has a song "Po Hen" based on the poem of author Cao Tran Nguyen. To pay tribute to the martyrs who died for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, Lieutenant Colonel Vu Thi Huyen Ngoc, Cultural Officer of the Political Department, Vietnam Border Guard Command, wrote the song "Love on the top of Po Hen" about the brave sacrifice of female martyr Hoang Thi Hong Chiem and the soldiers in the war to protect the northern border.
In terms of fine arts, there are also many works about Po Hen. The most typical is the series of paintings by artist Nguyen Duong depicting the story of Hoang Thi Hong Chiem in the Vietnam Pictorial Newspaper in 1979. This series of paintings was also used by the Vietnam Cinema Studio for projection work to serve audiences during those years. Later, many artists and sculptors from inside and outside the province came to create works about Po Hen.
Sculptor Ly Xuan Truong, during his lifetime, also made a monument to martyr Hoang Thi Hong Chiem, which is still on display in the yard of a high school in her hometown in Mong Cai City. The statue is simple and gentle, just like her, but still exudes the "heroic - indomitable" spirit of Vietnamese women. Similarly, painter Nghiem Vinh, a member of the Quang Ninh Literature and Arts Association, has a monument complex of Po Hen border guards and villagers protecting the border, which is currently on display at the memorial house welcoming guests at Po Hen Martyrs Monument.
In the field of literature, there have been books written about Po Hen, but they are quite thin and not worthy of the sacrifice of the martyrs. The late author Tong Khac Hai wrote a memoir published in a book called "Hoang Thi Hong Chiem". Mr. Hoang Nhu Ly, a former scout of the 209 Po Hen Armed Police Station (now the Po Hen Border Guard Station, Quang Ninh Border Guard) from 1972 to 1979, wrote the book "Hien ngang Po Hen - Forever Memories", published by the Writers' Association Publishing House in 2019.
