Depends on vision

The list of 17 sports, which are still awaiting approval from the competent authorities, includes: Swimming, weightlifting, fencing, badminton, archery, shooting, boxing, athletics, taekwondo, wrestling, rowing, cycling, karate, judo, gymnastics, sepak takraw and wushu. Of these, some are “planned” with the main goal of the Olympics, some for the goal of winning medals at the ASIAD.

According to the Sports Industry's forecast, investment costs for key sports need about 175 - 180 billion VND for the period 2026 - 2030. This amount will increase by 10% for the following periods.

In general, although the specific investment plan for each sport in each year is not clear, it can be seen that the above expected investment budget is not much, especially when many sports in Vietnam are not yet attractive to socialized funding sources.

In that context, the question is on what basis will the specific investment plan for each subject be implemented, and will it fall into the situation of leveling and spreading?

Last weekend, the Vietnam Sports Administration held a conference on developing a program to develop key sports to prepare for the Olympics and ASIAD in the 2026-2046 period.

From the conference theme - which has no content related to the SEA Games, there is a sense of the vision and priority direction of Vietnamese sports in the journey to participate in international sports arenas in the coming time. The right vision governs the action plan, accordingly, even the sports included in the key investment portfolio need to be classified to have a reasonable investment method.

In the near future, given the limited investment budget for this work, more specific consideration is needed to narrow or change the number of subjects on the key investment list.

The investment focus is not only on subjects that have achieved positive international results, but also subjects that are considered suitable for Vietnamese people and have good future development.

On the contrary, there are sports that are showing good results but are not popular in the continent or the world, so they should be put out of the list of key investments...
