According to the distributor, director Bui Thac Chuyen's war blockbuster reached 60,000 pre-sold tickets before the film's official release, something that has never happened before with historical films.
It was scheduled to be released in theaters on April 4, but because it fell on two days of national mourning, causing theaters to close, The Tunnels was not officially released to the public until April 6.
According to statistics from the Box Office Vietnam system , as of 2:00 p.m. on April 6, The Tunnels has reached the 50 billion mark (including early screenings on April 2 and 3 as well as pre-booked tickets).
Positive feedback from viewers and experts from the first screenings, combined with good word of mouth, and the film premiering during the holiday season, has led to theaters opening at full capacity to increase screenings for The Tunnel. Today alone, April 6, the film had more than 5,000 screenings, an unprecedented feat for this genre of film.
