Hanoi Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District, the section passing Hanoi Pedagogical University, was jammed when more than 6,000 candidates left after the 10th grade entrance exam on the afternoon of June 1.
At around 4:30 p.m., after submitting their specialized subject exams, more than 6,000 candidates left, finishing the entrance exam to grade 10 at Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted. The students were often waited for and picked up by their parents, many families had both parents present.
Although the Pedagogical College has arranged many young volunteers to guide and direct traffic, congestion still occurs in front of the school gate. At this time, the temperature in Hanoi is still around 37 degrees Celsius, and it may be higher outside.
At the side gate area, thousands of parents and students were stuck because two cars were blocking the exit gate. Xuan Thuy Street, the section through this gate, only had one small lane for other vehicles, the other two lanes were occupied by cars and motorbikes of parents parked.
She made an appointment with her father to pick her up at the side gate, but nearly half an hour passed, and Quynh Anh, from Bac Tu Liem district, still had not seen her father. Squeezing through the crowded traffic to get to the other side of the street, the female student called and was told that her father was still stuck on Xuan Thuy street, near the Academy of Journalism and Communication, about 500 meters away.
"After a stressful day of exams, I was stuck in traffic on the way back, feeling tired and exhausted," Quynh Anh said. In two days, she will continue taking the entrance exam for the 10th grade English major at the Foreign Language High School, Hanoi National University.
Passing through the side gate of Hanoi National University of Education at a traffic jam, Ms. Hoang Kim Thanh, 27 years old, was surprised. She said that this is the route she takes to work every day, usually only slightly congested, rarely as long as this.
"Seeing many parents and students, I just found out that there are exams today. Traffic jams in hot weather make people quite exhausted," said Ms. Thanh.
About 200 meters away, at the gate of Hanoi National University, many parents find their way out through this gate, because the two schools are connected.
Because the campus of Hanoi National University of Education is connected to Hanoi National University, many parents find their way out through this school gate. However, the exit of the National University gate is also crowded. Three school guards stand at the gate, constantly shouting and blowing their whistles to control the flow of vehicles.
"It probably takes half an hour to get 100 meters from the gate of the Pedagogical School to here," said Mr. Hung, a parent in Bac Tu Liem district.
After the exam, he took his son on foot to Hanoi National University and then went up the pedestrian bridge to the shopping mall across the street to have a coffee instead of taking the car home right away. The father thought that his son had just been sitting in the exam room for two and a half hours and was already very tired. If he had to move around in traffic, he would be even more tired.
Today, Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted held the entrance exam for grade 10. The school recruited 315 students for 7 specialized classes, with more than 6,100 candidates registering. This is the specialized school with the most registered candidates in Hanoi.
Students take the Math and Literature exams in the morning, each subject lasting 90 minutes, and the specialized subject exam in the afternoon lasts 120 minutes. At noon, many parents and students choose to eat and sleep at school, avoiding moving around in the hot sun.
