Today, General Secretary To Lam, his wife Ngo Phuong Ly and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation paid a state visit to Indonesia. The visit was made at the invitation of Indonesian President and Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto.
This is a historic visit in the relationship between the two countries. General Secretary To Lam is the highest leader of the Party to visit Indonesia since the visit of our Party General Secretary in 2017.
The visit is the opening event of a meaningful year for Vietnam and Indonesia, when the two countries celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Day and 70 years of diplomatic relations (December 30, 1955 - December 30, 2025).

Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi said that in addition to the welcoming ceremonies of the State visit, the two sides are expected to hold a meeting focusing on trade, investment and business cooperation, with the direct participation of the General Secretary and the business community of both sides, especially including Indonesian businesses that have been present in Vietnam for at least 30 years.
The two sides are looking forward to taking their bilateral relationship to the next level. With the current developments, both countries are ready to take their relationship even stronger, contributing to the realization of their shared vision of becoming high-income countries by 2045.
Within ASEAN, Indonesia is currently Vietnam’s second largest trading partner while Vietnam ranks fourth among Indonesia’s major trading partners. Two-way trade turnover maintains a continuous growth momentum, from 9 billion USD in 2019 to 16.7 billion USD in 2024.
The leaders of the two countries have agreed to soon increase two-way trade turnover to 18 billion USD. The two countries also regularly exchange defense and security delegations and actively participate in activities within the ASEAN framework.
The Indonesian Ambassador expressed pride and optimism when mentioning the long history of close relations between the two countries, declaring independence in the same year, almost at the same time. Therefore, Vietnam and Indonesia together realize the goal of becoming high-income countries at the time when both countries celebrate 100 years of independence.
It is expected that the two sides will have a memorandum of understanding between the two governments, with content covering many areas, from politics, economics to issues such as engineering technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, education, and agriculture.
The Ambassador acknowledged that the two countries have a lot of potential for cooperation that is being discussed, especially in business-to-business trade.
In Indonesia, there is the Indonesia-Vietnam Friendship Association and in Vietnam as well. Through it, the two sides are trying to organize special events to show the close relationship, not only between government and government, between people and people, but also other diverse connections such as art, culture...
Ambassador Denny Abdi affirmed that with a close relationship in all aspects, not only developing bilateral relations, Indonesia and Vietnam can also positively influence the Southeast Asian region, together with other ASEAN member countries. This is really important in the current complex regional and global context.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong said that during the visit, General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto are expected to discuss strategic visions for developing relations and measures to further promote bilateral cooperation, including new areas such as green energy, high-tech agriculture, cultural exchange, education, and tourism development.
The two leaders will also discuss the direction of bilateral cooperation to realize the potential and move towards new heights of Vietnam-Indonesia relations.
The contents discussed and agreed upon by the two leaders during the visit will be an important basis to create momentum for the two countries to further consolidate understanding and political trust, creating a solid foundation to continue strengthening bilateral relations through Party, Government, National Assembly, local and people-to-people channels.
